“I really love an intelligently written mystery. That's what we have in A VENGEFUL LONGING, which is also the second in a series (hopefully long series) by Roger Morris. This is a period piece book, set in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1868, in the summer. The first book, THE GENTLE AXE, was also set in St. Petersburg, but in the winter. I hope that means that we have t least two more books to look forward to. The plot is complicated. We have a detective, Porfiry Petrovich and a new Robinlike sidekick, Virginsky, who are detectives looking for a serial murderer. First there is a double poisoning, which is gruesomely described in the first few pages. Much yuck. But so well told that you can both visualize and smell what happens between the pages. There are other murders that begin to occur and the task is to find who is doing these bad deeds, are they connected and if so why? Get the first book, THE GENTLE AXE and then delve into this one. Well worth it if you like your mysteries dense and the who done it part really unknown until the end.”
