    Mistborn

Entertaining with some fun magic ideas. Plot lines a little predictable, but it's probably meant for teens anyway. Gets better in book two.

    Daynight

    • Rated 5 stars

I'm a little tired of dystopian novels, but Daynight has a unique and fresh story line that didn't have any trouble keeping my interest. In fact, it was hard to put the book down! It has a good balance of action and romance. The characters are well done. I'm anxious for the sequel!

This is a second read for me and I actually read it quite slowly, enjoying every morsel! Amazing how much more you understand about Lincoln when you see him interacting with people who don't agree with him or when events call on him to do some deep creative thinking. Sometimees he does this all, of course, with a sense of humor or a colorful story. Other times he thinks of solutions that no one has ever thought of before. Oh, that someone in the present congress had these skills.

View community for 40 years, many of these vignettes about Steve Jobs were not new to me ; however, I never really knew what a jerk he was to work for and to be in relationship with. A genius, pure and simple but a jerk, nonetheless. BTW, I have been an avid Mac user since the early 80's when I bought a Macintosh. Each Apple product is for me a joy to use and this book helped me see why I became so committed to Apple products.

Because Larson chose to tell about the Dodds, family of an American Ambassador to Germany as the Nazis were gaining power; all the other characters we know so well (Himmler, Goring, Goebbels, and of course, Hitler) seem all the more dispicable. In addition, the reader learns how false impressions (in this case, the U.S. State Department as well as the German people) can be blinded by the truth.

A Death in Italy: The Definitive Account of the Amanda Knox Case

Fascinating read. Well-written. The author helps you see how Amanda Knox and her boyfriend became a suspect in this murder; but it's also terrifying that she came very close to being in jail in Italy for the rest of her life. Was glad to get the real story.

Magnificent writing about the fire of 1910, the biggest fire in U.S. history. Egan, a pulitzer prize winning journalist, combines elegant writing about a swatch of Montana and Idaho that was ravaged by a hurricane of flames. Egan includes interesting real-life accounts of the people who were the first forest rangers in our nation and who were helpless in preventing a fire such as this. We see them in small towns in this region before, during, and after the fire--though many didn't make it through. This is a book I'll never forget, even though the towns described are no longer there. I love how this masterful storyteller interweaves a fair amount of history about Teddy Roosevelt and Gifford Pinchot who acquired this land "for the people of America" and became known as pioneers in setting up national parks in the west.

    The Night Circus

I was enchanted through 2/3 of the book but for me it took too long for the two main characters to meet and the truth is, I don't love fantasy the way most people do. It lagged 2/3 through for me.
