Hi Ann!I'll be sending you a PM shortly with my email, so you can send any pics you might have. My pumpkin was just your run of the mill goofy Jack O' Lantern, might try something a little more complicated next year though. Anyway, no the books haven't gotten here yet, expect they should be here by today, I hope. But they did warn its a lot slower than Netflix. That would be fine if I could afford one of the plans for more books, you can stagger them then. But I started out on the 2 at a time plan, so looks like I am going to be waiting awhile between orders (you have to send them back 2 at a time, so I can't read one and then send it back and have another shipped. If I was on the FOUR at a time plan, I could read two and send them back, and still have two at home. I am planning on switching to that plan when we get the taxes taken care of). We actually haven't been watching a lot of movies lately, may go rent some today. I was hoping Netflix would send Hellboy II this weekend, but noooo....;-) There is a long wait. I'm looking forward to seeing it, because I LOVED the first one. Anyway, I haven't seen The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, but it is now added to my Netflix queue.Hope you are having a good weekend! Talk to you soon.
Hey Ann!I'd been MIA here for nearly a week, and also hadn't been checking my e-mails as often as i usually do... but yes, i did get your e-mails thanks :)I stopped by Shelfari briefly yesterday to update my page and reply to messages, and comment/post on the groups... and then forgot to go and reply to my e-mails which i had planned to do... sorry!!Anyway, i am off to do so now... "see you there soon" :):)
Hi Ann,I just got home about an hour ago (7:45 PM)...whew, what a day. I'm pretty exhausted. Yes, my friend Bob came in tonight to talk to my class about Pathological Gambling--he did a great job. I was up until 10 P.M. last night grading the second exam, and then had just enough time this afternoon to type up the answer key for the class (mine are pretty detailed; I provide percentages for who got each question correct, detailed responses for the questions that gave the class the most trouble, etc.). We do have Cold Stone back here on the East; so glad to hear things are going well with assessments and with Jay and Jacob. It probably was me (?) who recommended Solyaris to you, though I can't say for certain--maybe as an outgrowth of Chukrai/"Ballad of Soldier", finding other highlights of Russian cinema (Tarkovsky is one of the most famous). You might like "The Cranes Are Flying" as well by Kalatazov, another great anti-war movie (it actually came before "Ballad of a Soldier" and was more groundbreaking from a historical perspective).Best, Joe
Hi Ann,Just a short message--I am crazy stressed out right now at my reg. job and with teaching. I sent you an invite on Facebook...I have seen Solyaris, and several other Tarkovsky movies: Andrei Rublyev, Stalker, and Nostalghia. With regards to the music of Solyaris, the composer (Eduard Artemiev)--I have corresponded from time to time with his son Artemiy Artemiev, who is also a musician/composer. Great guy, from our correspondence--very warm and positive.More later, Joe
Hi Ann!Thanks so much for your welcome! When I saw the name of the group - well, it was a given that I'd join it =) So far I've only posted in the "Movies You've Watched During the Month" thread (it's great to see what other people are watching), but I'll be checking out the other discussions soon...See you on there =)roo
Hi Ann! Sorry for the late response...have been busy lately. How have things been on your end? The class? Jay & Jacob? Inquiring minds want to know! ;-) Seriously, glad to hear you are back in action, with a new computer. Hey, did we ever get any replied to "Pawnbroker"? Best, Joe
Hi Ann,Thanks so much for the warm welcome. I've actually checked out the discussions of the group but haven't had much time to try and participate in them yet. I will check out the movies you've recommended, though since I'm not in the US, not all the movies discussed might be available here in my country. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to leave me a note. I will be sure to try and participate in the discussions soon.Trish
The Life Before Her Eyes stars Uma Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood, its about a survivor of a school shooting, and her life years after. There's more to it than that, but I won't say anymore in case you want to watch it. Definitely watch Dexter, its an excellent show. And so is Dead Like Me....its about an 18 year old girl that dies suddenly and is then recruited to be a Grim Reaper. Its a great mix of dark comedy and drama, very smart writing. Too bad it didn't last longer (there's only two seasons). Yeah, I think it was the remake Ron watched. or watched half of, but I am not sure. I'll have to ask him again. I never had much interest in either one for some reason. Yes, I fell down the stairs....its ridiculous...lol. My back is actually okay, now anyway, and most of the bruising is gone (I was a rather interesting shade of purple for a few days :P). My ankle, and a couple of other areas, are still bothering me though. But I'm healing. And we moved our bedroom downstairs, I don't think Ron trusts me to walk downstairs anymore...LOL.Oh forgot to tell you, I got to see The Midnight Meat Train (it was online at fearnet.com) and you were right, I liked it.....;-)That's great about the pumpkins, would have liked to see them! :-) I carved my first pumpkin this year.......just a simple one, and it came out okay. I liked my husband's better, it was a little wacky.....haha. As for Booksfree, they have a great selection of paperbacks. I haven't gotten my first two books yet, so I am not sure how quickly you get them. But another good thing is you can donate paperbacks to them, and for each one they keep (they have to be titles they carry, and in like new condition) they give you a dollar credit. It doesn't go toward your rentals, but you can buy from them as well, so it will go toward whatever books you want to buy from them. There is also a forum there.Hope you are having a good day! Talk to you soon, Ann.
Hi there! Good to see you back. :-)We just watched Iron Man this weekend (which I loved, because I am crazy about Robert Downey Jr.) and I watched The Life Before Her Eyes, which I didn't really like. It had the potential to be very good, the acting was good, the story was intriguing.....but it never really pulled me in. I joined Booksfree (like Netflix for books) last night, and they have just shipped out my first couple of books to me. I figure that will save me some money. I'll let you know how it is. Been watching a lot on Netflix instant play lately actually. We watched the first season of Dexter (And I absolutely LOVED it) another added to my must buy list....*sighs* and now watching the first season of Dead Like Me, which I am also enjoying. I've never seen Solaris (haven't seen the original film either) but my husband was bored by it...LOL...so I have steered clear. And I wanted to see [rec] before I watched Quarantine (I usually try to avoid remakes until I can see the original). Our Halloween was good, we watched movies that night, and went to the corn maze the day after. Unfortunately, I had a bad fall that week (down the stairs...LOL), and have been sore ever since....I'm such a klutz....:P So I haven't been feeling that great, but I am healing. :-) And Halloween wasn't as much fun as it would have been otherwise. We kept surprising the "spooks" in the corn maze, I think we were moving too quietly, so they never could scare us...haha. Anyway, how was your Halloween?Well, I should go, want to get some laundry done today. Talk to you soon! :-)
Update from Chiller:Discussion for our November author Donald Michael Platt is now going on. Also taking nominations for out December author until November 13. Thanks
Sorry about that Ann, hope you are back online soon! Happy Halloween! :-)
Hi Ann! :-)Yep, I figured you most be busy. I completely understand. I know how it can be. It was good to hear from you though. I've been feeling okay, actually, not sleeping a lot, but other than that I have no complaints. Been watching a lot of movies the last week. A lot of Asian horror, and my husband and I watched The Strangers the other night, which was kind of disappointing to me (and a tad frustrating, but the acting was pretty good). I'm glad you are enjoying Six Feet Under, yes the writing is very good and I also love the cast. I've liked Peter Krause since Sports Night. And Michael C. Hall is also good, I have only seen a couple of episodes of Dexter, but I plan to buy the first couple of seasons soon, because I loved the episodes I watched. Audition is a very disturbing film. I was really impressed the first time I watched it. Takashi Miike is an incredible director, I don't always LIKE his films, but they are always interesting. He's done far more shocking films than Audition though...LOL...I still haven't recovered from Visitor Q, and I watched it months ago...;-) Definitely got a good deal there! I was hoping we would have a little extra for DVDs, because Best Buy is having a great Halloween sale online right now. But trying to be responsible and save some money....I'll let you know how that works out for us, because I don't think we are going last long before a DVD buying binge...LOL.Hope you are having a good day and that you have a great weekend! Hope to talk to you soon. :-)
Hi Ann,DON'T PRESSURE YOURSELF!!!! :) [So sayeth the hypocrite ;) ] But anyway, I am glad you had a good weekend. Sounds like you did some cool stuff there...Battle Royale is quite twisted, as is (as I'm sure you know by now) Audition. Yikes that scene on the floor...so sexy!!! [Just kidding :) ] I simply don't have time to watch much of anything right now. When I come home, I want to just check my fave sites (like this one), maybe read, and then go to bed. I went for a run yesterday for the first time in a while--it's harder now that it's getting darker and colder. I am taking a break from Halloween (where I spend upwards of $50 or more on candy each year--TONS of kids in this neighborhood, and they let the kids from adjacent neighborhoods come in as well, because the houses are so close together) this year to go running with a co-worker/friend of mine who's in the midst of a divorce (I think I've paid my Halloween dues for the years I've lived here so far, so can take this year off). She's an incredible runner (she ran the Boston Marathon this year)--runs 6 miles a day, and is right now commuting an hour each way between work, staying with her family. I can't believe the degree of patience, compassion, and loyalty she's shown throughout this (and yet she's always so self-effacing, never gives herself credit). I want to be there for her, I can tell she's pretty stressed out right now, so a run will do the trick for both of us...
