Austin in Seattle

I live in Seattle as an Electrical Engineering Student at Seattle Pacific University. Born and raised in Olympia, Washington, I have never really been an avid book reader. Recently, reading books and studying the Word of God has given me new depth and great insights into the spiritual realm and the physical world. Books have now become a...more »

  • A Biblical Point of View on Homosexuality (A Biblical Point of View On)
    • Rated 1 stars

I'm starting up a bit of a case study on homosexuality and Christianity. this was my intro book and I thought it would give a good overall summary of the subject. Instead, it was heartless and dry, and continually brought up the "homosexual agenda." while the agenda may affect us a great deal (in our schools and workplaces) it is not the whole of homosexuality. I thought this book was biased against homosexual people groups and not nearly loving. it was more like gay bashing.

I found it to be a good sequel. Just as well written, though not as exciting, as A Million Little Pieces. despite the exaggerations he made, I think James has a unique way of writing that keeps the reader's attention. This book, like the last, has the power to provoke strong emotions.

I've never been much of a fiction book reader, but I was introduced to this by a friend who suggested I give it a try. This is one of the books he suggested and I couldn't put it down. After 3 days I was finished. Maybe I'm just out of practice, but I never predicted the ending and was completely taken by surprise. Also, as is always the case, I saw the movie and the book was much better (duh).

  • The Prayer of Jabez Devotional: Breaking Through to the Blessed Life
    • Rated 1 stars

Although i don't like to criticize, I feel responsible to at least explain why I gave this book only one star. I read through the whole book, and I was borderline offended. Two main points dominated this book: reciting a prayer yields blessing and what you should pray for are blessings for yourself. The first point is my impression that the power to make things happen is in the words of your prayer rather than the heart behind it. I felt that Wilkinson was saying that if you recite the prayer of Jabez, you will be blessed; the condition of your heart and your willingness to be the Lord's fully devoted servant were not stipulated as they should've been. Secondly, almost everything in that prayer was a prayer for MY blessing. I can't recall any part that included praying for others or humbling one's self; instead the prayers seemed extremely self-centered. Even what Wilkinson said about "enlarging my territory" being analogous to those I influence for Christ, it seemed as though he was saying that he wanted God to expand his circle of influence - as if it belonged to him. We are all surrounded by people who need Christ, not us. The Holy Spirit will call us to be messengers of Christ and we should always be a witness; our goal shouldn't be "grant me more followers". I hope this clarified why I rated this book so low. If you believe I am mistaken on these points, please write a note and let me know what you think.

  • Experiencing God: Knowing And Doing The Will Of God
    • Rated 5 stars

Absolutely amazing. Like so many other Christian theme books or devotionals though, you won't be impressed or radically changed if you are not willing to put in the time and effort that "Experiencing God" deserves. I have nearly finished the devotion for the first time and I have seen God moving in my life and changing my heart. In January '08, I will be using this devotion as the primary tool in a small group Bible study, believing in faith that God will change even those most resistant to submission.

  • A Million Little Pieces

I was introduced to this book just after James Frey had been found out for his exaggerations. it turned out to have little effect on the story itself. i was captivated by the flow of the story and the raw emotion communicated through simple yet strong words.

  • Letters From a Skeptic: A Son Wrestles with His Father's Questions about Christianity
    • Rated 4 stars

As an growing and believing Christian, I couldn't help but to be affirmed in my faith that God is good, Christ Jesus died for our sins, and we are his children I feel almost like I have the disadvantage of not being a doubter just so I could experience the truths revealed in here as if they were brand new!

Even now I don't have the words to describe the my faith and defend it in the manner Gregory Boyd does, all I have is my own testimony of experiencing Christ and having a personal relationship with the Almighty God. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has doubts pertaining to Christ, because I am sure that no argument can stand up to his words and the words of Christ that do not require infinitely more faith.

  • Searching for God Knows What

I enjoyed the laid back nature, but quality material of this particular book. I know I also committed a "party foul" by not first reading Blue Like Jazz; nonetheless I found this book to be a fun read.
