A nice problem to have: he reads tons but always wants to turn pages himself so it's all board books, all the time. He's also gotten pickier. No, read it this morning already-next! No, not in the mood--next! Also, turning pages for a one year old means that longer more text-y board books are a shadow of themselves--even they zip along--so... more »

Glad you enjoyed Reading Magic. I think one of the simplest and most effective tips I got was to slow down when finishing the book. It made me realise I was often rushing to finish without realising it.

Yes McEwen really is a master, isn't he? I read a great interview with him and Zaide Smith where he talks about the novel, and discusses how some of the passages on neurosurgery were a metaphor for the writing process.

I loved how he captured a particular, in-between, somewhat forgotten period in modern history - post Sept 11, pre Iraq war.

I read the book immediately before the London riots. It's interesting to think about how the riots would have changed my reading. I think the riots in some ways made it more relevant to today, but also dates it as 'pre-riots' London novel.

Thanks Sarah for your recommendation of "The Sportswriter", I'm looking forward to reading it. I can see we have a lot of my favourite books in common so I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

Best wishes on your baby. A couple of books my wife and I would recommend:

"A bun in the oven: the real guide to pregnancy" by Kaz Cooke - very very funny, and good for one's sanity.

"The Wonder Weeks. How To Stimulate Your Baby's Mental Development And Help Him Turn His 8 Predictable, Great, Fussy Phases Into Magical Leaps Forward" by Hetty Van de Rijt, Frans Plooij.
An interesting perspective on child development that most other books don't cover.

Thanks! That's a very good point! Of course, now I can't wait to read it to see if you're right :-).

p.s. I read many different styles of books; I haven't put them all on my shelf, especially the ones I read in French.

LOVE that book! I kept reading big sections out loud to Jeff, so he could remember his ad agency days - you are right it is still the same. My new facebook quote is from her: "You don't need an argument for buying butter. It's a natural, human instinct. "
    -Scholar and theologian Dorothy Sayers

I'm going thru all the Wimsey books - havent read lots of them it turns out - and that was my fave. Although I've just started and I'm enjoying Gaudy Night very much too.

Hey, I'm not sure I've told you a BIG THANK YOU for Dont Lets Go To The Dogs, - listened to it on tape last year and was so DELIGHTED to have the book - to re-read my favorite parts and also to look at the pictures!

    Until soon,
    J.

by the way... i see that you recommended independence day. i am in the middle of it. not loving it. i love the writing and i am interested to know what happens next but something about it just isn't drawing me in. i am about to put it down to finish it another time. maybe it is just that i have read too many male mid-life crisis books -- they do all seem to win the awards. (rabbit, run was much more my style. this just seems somewhat like a tamer, 80s version) it could also be that i came off reading the truly dynamic non-fiction work about teddy roosevelt called wilderness warrior. that was a savory big morsel of delicious writing. lots to read. little time. good luck. thanks again.

glad you liked it. that was my favorite of his books... other than amsterdam. i liked the other one, too, just thought it was a bit boring in the middle. then again, people say that they think saturday is boring.

thanks so much for the response!! i'm nearly finished Kavalier and Clay, so hopefully i'll be reading The Escapist next!
i actually saw it last winter before i even knew of Kavalier and Clay, but talked myself out of buying it. i'm really glad to know you found it enjoyable even after reading the novel!! i was afraid the comic wouldn't live up to how wonderfully it's described in the novel.

well, you did make it (the reason I should read 'Dear Exile') sound sentimental, but it made it all the better. Your description made me think of 'the Guernsey Literary and Potatoe Peel Pie Society' (which, also, fantastic book, though it's almost all fiction) but since 'Dear Exile' isn't fiction, it sounds even more appealing. I'm gonna try to find it somewhere.
thanks! (and sorry for the late response)
