My affinity for books began when I was in elementary school. Around the third grade my mom purchased a gift set of The Baby-sitters club, books 1,2 and 3. Once I opened the first book I was hooked. Over the years I have read many many books. Currenty I am particulary drawn to books about slavery, race relations, politics etc. I love other...more »

    Hi Nappy,

I see you and I have an afffinty for books about slavery, so I thought I would drop a line about what I'm reading now, Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill. Very good so far, I also read a Song Yet Song by James McBride. I think you'll like both if you have not read them yet.

    Peace, Shevi

Hello dear member of the Black Feminist/Womanist Literature group! It's J., the admin., and I'm writing to inform you of the group's new look! (And it goes beyond the change in our group picture, though it is nice, don't you agree?) :) What we're discussing now: Patricia Hill Collins' Black Feminist Thought, Toni Morrison's Sula for our July read, our little BIG Read: 7 short stories in 7 days to begin later this month, the National Black Arts Festival where Alice Walker and Pearl Cleage are featured speakers, and more!

We'll soon have a group blog up and running, will begin profiling the uberly dynamic authors within our own group, discussing women's/girls action coalitions in your city, reviving some of our good ol' threads, etc.

I challenge everyone to invite at least one friend (already a member of shelfari or otherwise) to join the Black Feminist/Womanist Literature group and to log in at least bi-weekly. (Though weekly would be wonderful!) And I pledge to do the same.

And did you know that Toni Morrison's new novel, A Mercy, is due to be released in November? Ah, you would if you'd visited our group page! (No, actually, I haven't posted this information. lol) But do stop by and fall into the purple haze that is extraordinary literature by feminists of color!

    Love, Jaya

Glad to hear you are getting rest. I haven't yet put DD into practice, but I purchased b/c one of my children is very picky. I'll be sneaking in vegetables momentarily. Right now I give him the V8 juice that blends fruit juice and vegetables. He gets a serving of vegetables with each 8oz glass. Protein only from eggs and peanut butter. Things are going well though. Life's ups and downs as usual.

    Hey Nappy,
I am just checking in on you. I hope that you are getting enough rest with the new baby. I wondered if you finished reading East of Eden and what did you think about it?

    Bless!

    Ni Nappy,
Hope you and your family are doing well and you are finding some time to read. I just finished Singer of Souls, a short and very fast-paced fantasy that was a lot of fun. Now reading The Other Boleyn Girl, but it's not grabbing me so far. I'm only 50 pages in so I'll give it a chance. Have you read it yet?

Hi Nappy, the Other Boleyn Girl was definitely a page turner for me. There were times when I would get angry and frustrated with the Boleyn family and Anne Boleyn and also just the way women were seen as property back then... but still a very good read. I hope you enjoy it.

Hy Nappy, I am a newbie too. My friend recommended me this group as she is an avid reader. I have read some of the book by Ken Follett called Pillars of the Earth. A very long but fascinating book. Will try to get a chance to read it when I have the time... My sister said she read Kite Runner and she enjoyed it very much. She is a retired Librarian, so she tells me about all the good books.LOL
    Have a great week.
    Gl with your books.....

Do you try to sleep when the baby is sleep? It's a trying peroid but everything will fall into place and you'll get on a schedule. Well have a good weekend. Talk to ya soon!

    Hey Nappie!
I haven't been on here for what seems like forever, even thought it's probably just been like a week or two. Life can get so out of hand with 4 kids and a big ol' man person to look after. I think I'm finally getting a grip again. I read The Reincarnationist for the real Late Night Bookies club and liked it, but didn't love it. I've kind of been jonesin' for some kind of masterpiece of a book and East of Eden fits the bill. Are you still making your way through it or are you on to something else? I'm waiting for my next bookclub title to come in the mail. I picked up Girls Guide to Hunting and Fishing while waiting for Reincarnationist to come. I'm gonna finish that next...it's short and it makes me laugh. I kinda need that lately. Hope you're little ones are doing well. Mine are now that the sun is starting to shine on a more regular basis..... Optic Junkie

Hi there! I must have read this book over 10 years ago, and I think I need a refresher. I do remember it being very positive and shedding a whole new light on things for me. I will update you.

Hey Miss Nappy Momma Newbie! How's the little one doing? Have you recovered yourself? I had the hardest time for about the first 2 months postpartum with all my be-bes. I think it's awesome you find time to read. East of Eden...thanks for reminding me. I did want to read that again. It's been years. What's the other book you're reading at the same time? I can't do that...I don't get either book read all the way when I do. I think I have a form of adult ADD so I must not do things to feed it!

Hi Nappy, thanks for responding, yes, I had the meeting earlier today. We talked about everything that you mentioned. I also found the reading guide so that helped to. I was also going to talk about the members circus experience but I axed that because there was so many more things we could discuss. I don't know if you remember but in the book they mentioned the circus fire in Hartford. Well that's were I live and I know the history about that big fire. One member was not aware that it had ever happened (she's like ten years younger). All in all it was a very good meeting. I served circus food, hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn, cotton candy, etc. We all had a good time.
