I'm a fond reader and I started reading in English one year ago. A friend told me about this group, so I hope we can share our love for books and learning reading-skills, to choose next book and so on. I was born in Barcelona, Spain and right now we live in a little village, near Montserrat mountain... a spiritual spot full of fresh air,...more »

Hi Elisabeth. I am in Door County wisconsin for the weekend. Really beautiful. the very tip of the wisconsin thumb on the map. I am re reading THE Natural History of the Senses this week. I really love this author and this book in particular was one of my favorites. About three weeks until my cafe re opens so I am maxing out my freedom! I would like to read about the Spanish civil war. I am completely ignorant of that war.

How are you faring my Friend? What are you recommending lately? Have really been enjoying Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Have you read it? I am reading it as a business book and learning a lot but so enjoying the story as well. My cafe is closed for remodeling six months now, was only supposed to be a month so I have had a little more time than usual. WE are having a strange summer here. Put in a pool this year since our summers have gotten so very hot. This year, now chilly and rainy. Flooding is severe all around us. Come for a visit but not this summer!

in reference to the book you've read, "snow falls on cedar". The location of that story is on an island
just south of my home. Sad to say, so is the prejudice and the interment camps for the Japanese were here in
State of Washington as well. Darlene

Hello Elisabeth, I hope that you are settling into summer, and that things are going reasonably well with your family. The news from my part of the world is that my town is experiencing flooding. The Rock River is higher than anyone can remember. People are evacuated from homes, businesses and roads are closed, and the city manager says we're looking at $25 million in damage. That said, my house is not near the river, and my husband and I have no flood damage. There is some humor; people are catching catfish by hand in flooded parking lots. We had thought we would take a couple overnight bicycle trips on state trails, but most of them are closed due to high water. I have been reading some, but mostly painting. This month I have an exhibit at our local library (which is right next to the flooded river). It comes down July 1st. We have only one vacation trip planned, to Colorado to meet with some college friends. I hope it is fun, and that we don't have delays in our flights.

    Happy reading,

    Sherry

Ola Elisabeth! I know what you mean about your profile about cats, I like them
too! They are way precious than our dogs. Hope I could help you with your

    Elisabeth,

You make me feel lazy! You have learned those languages!!! That is great!

My writing style is rather plain. I write like I think. Ha.

Well, if you're fluent in French, then I will say "Bonjour, Elisabeth! Comment allez-vous?" So, you speak Spanish (obviously), French and English. Anything else? German, maybe? Or Portuguese? We Americans are notoriously monolingual, and I am always envious of Europeans who tend to know at least one other language very well indeed, and probably have a smattering of one or two other languages as well. I know I could do something about that and actually go study languages, but then I think of homework and exams and it just sounds exhausting!

You asked about The God of Animals. It's about a pre-teen girl, Alice, living on a horse ranch in Colorado (at least, I think it was Colorado ... it doesn't really matter). Her mother took to her room a decade ago, and her older sister recently married very young and then took off with her husband. This leaves Alice essentially alone with her father, whose ranch isn't what it used to be and who can barely scrape enough money together to repair the much-needed air conditioner. Alice learns to cope with this and with the death of a classmate, as well as an unusual relationship with a teacher. The book definitely doesn't center on the horses, but their presence drives the characters and informs their lives. I suspect the book would speak more to females than to males, as it will likely conjure up all those feelings you might have had just prior to puberty. Anyway, I really enjoyed it, though it's not necessarily my usual type of book.

I will say au revoir for now, as I'm at work and should probably buckle down and do my job!

    Hi Elisabeth b,

An open mic session is where they allow anyone from the audience to come to the stage and recite your poetry or sing your song. I recite poetry. I am not shy, not anymore. There was a time in my life when I could not speak publicly. But you are valuable and your experience of life is uniquely your own and what you have to offer is worth sharing. Try taking a breath and imagine that you are a renown speaker giving a speech. No one is looking at you; they are looking at "her". Or imagine that you are talking to someone very special with whom you are intimate and comfortable and then speak as to that one person. The more you speak publically, the more you will be able to do it feeling relaxed.

I would like to look up your incredible shelf for future reads. You have made it so facile for us, to choose from your impressive list. I am for sure you will suggest the best ones to read thereafter, because you have read those magnificient books and endeared them too to rejoice. Have a mellow weekend! take care!

Thanks Elisabeth and congratulations on the passing marks. I am so sorry I've read your note only now, I was quite busy and I went home to the province to visit my sis-in-law who is also confined at the ICU in one of the hospitals there. Regards to your mom, I do hope she will get well soon.

Good morning, Elisabeth! I am sorry that your mother is ill. I can relate: my dad has been in and out of hospital and other care facilities since the end of February. Life is very hectic!

Congratulations on passing your exams! I am not learning Spanish. In fact, I took four years of French in high school; living closer to Canada than to Mexico, French just made a little more sense. My Spanish is, therefore, woefully lacking. I can say only a handful of phrases. The rest of the Spanish words I know are all food-related! My boyfriend and I are going to Paris this autumn, so later this month we are going to start a weekly French class at the local community college. I really need a refresher; I can’t even remember how to conjugate irregular verbs or form the past tense!

Gracie is nearly 9 years old, and Chloe is 6. Gracie is very much the stately lady (always has been), but she is getting a little cranky in her old age. Chloe has always acted like a bratty two-year-old child. Gracie and Chloe do NOT get along!

I hope you do get to come to the US this summer. Travel is good for the soul, I think. Your written English is very good, and I’m sure your spoken English is just fine. Fortunately, America’s big cities have pretty large Latino populations, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to get someone to understand you if your English fails you. Don’t be scared to speak English: just smile and do your best. English is a very flexible language, so even if your grammar isn’t perfect, it’s likely you will be understood. The trick is understanding what people say in response!

    Happy travels and happy reading!

Hello Elizabeth, I am so happy to hear from you. I am glad that your tests are over; that is really stressful. I went to college in my thirties, and, although I loved it, it was very difficult, especially with three kids. I am recovering well from my spinal surgery. I didn't think I would ever get to say that, because the pain afterwards was horrendous; much worse and lasted longer than I expected. I am getting better and better, though, although I will have to be careful for a long time. It was very major, and I have lots of metal in my back holding my spine in place. I have not been doing much other than reading and cross-stitching. Knitting is becoming very popular here, and I used to knit, many years ago. I am thinking of trying it again. Yesterday, we went to a family gathering, down in Sedona, which is a tourist town, with many red rock formations, lots of shops, restaurants, and art galleries. It's so pretty. We had a good time. So, I am getting out some, and trying to walk every day. I think I am running out of writing space. Please write again soon.

Thank you for the Mother's Day greeting! I was at Denver, CO enjoying my son and his family. My husband and I were also there for 3 book signings. It wasn't a "barn burner" but we did have fun meeting the readers of my book, "Nan's Journey". Meeting people is the best part!!!

Buenos dias, Elisabeth! Thanks for the note. You are so lucky to have been able to travel all over Europe, and with your kitties too! My two cats ... well, they aren't exactly show cats. Gracie (my avatar) is a scrawny little thing, and Chloe is bordering on Fat Cat. But I love 'em anyway. Have a lovely week!
