    Hi Emmylou!

Wow! ... It sounds like you've been really busy! I hope everything is going well for you. Life and work has been keeping me very busy as well. I am really starting to enjoy my teaching here in China. I am now teaching classes 5 times a week at two different colleges here in China. It's been a really great experience for me, and I am still teaching students of all ages and ability levels.

I've recently returned from a short trip to Hong Kong and was also told that I should try to teach there in the future. I'm thinking about pursuing a few opportunities there next year and applying for a position at a college and a secondary school.

How's life been treating you? I hope all is going well for you and for your family. I hope we will talk again soon.

Thanks for your wonderful note, Emmy! HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope this year will bring you and your family much love and happiness!

I'm glad to hear that you are safe! I had no idea that your hometown is the same town where the Mayon Volcano is located! That is pretty scary! I was happy to hear that you were not there and that you were in Manila, but I hope everything is okay for you!

I always look forward to your messages too! it's been great being able to write to you and get to know more about you! I don't think I will be on Shelfari while I'm in China, but I will keep my personal Yahoo e-mail and Yahoo Messenger account. My friend in China says that he uses his, so it should be okay. The only bad thing is I will have to go there and buy my own computer because I do not have a lap top right now. My friend has told me that they are fairly cheap in Hong Kong though, so I hope to get one quickly!

I will be sure to take your e-mail address with me! We will be able to stay in touch, I'm sure of it ... as long as we continue to try! Plus, we'll be much closer than we are now! And I have always wanted to see so much of Asia (including the Philippines, Taiwan, and Thailand). I am reallylooking forward to the trip, but I still have SO MUCH to get done before I can leave!

I hope you are well! Talk to you soon! : ) --G

    Hi Emmylou!

I hope you had a Merry Christmas! I also hope you and all of your family is okay ... I know the Phillipines has been affected by the volcano recently, and I just hope you are safe! How are you doing? Are you still as busy as ever?

I do have some news. It looks like I will be leaving to teach for a friend of mine in China in February (assuming that I receive my Visa okay and everything)! I have a friend over in Hong Kong who is a principal / supervisor of an English school and he's offered me a deal which is pretty sweet and too good to let pass by. I'm well qualified, I'll have a fairly "light" courseload (no more than 20 hours per week) and I will be teaching 3 different classes. Rent, utilities, heat, water, trash, and cable are ALL paid ... everything but clothes, food, and "entertainment." I'll have my own small apartment (I've seen pictures) and while I won't get rich ... I should be able to put a little money away in terms of saving. It's something I've wanted to do for a VERY LONG TIME! Finally, with the economy (and state budget of California the way it is right now) ... I just decided I couldn't say "NO" to this. Pretty exciting, huh?

My friend has been there for 4 years and he really likes it. His school is doing very well right now and has a good reputation, so I figure I will go and see what it's like! I am happy about it. It will be nice to make a major move and only have to pack a few suitcases this time! HA HA HA.

I better go for now. Please write when you get a chance. I hope you are doing well! Take care! --G

I've read most of Fulghum's stuff- some of it's good, some simplistic. I see you're friends with Greg, too- the Hammer- he's been a friend of mine for a long time. What else are you reading? I just finished some very good pulp fiction- THE CHAMBER by John Grisham- very entertaining. i am about to start on Jhumpa Lahiri's Pulitzer Prize winning collection of short stories- INTERPRETER OF MALADIES. Well Christmas is coming up, and I hope to get some gift certificate money to Amazon...take care and write back soon. Jason

    EMMYLOU!

Wow ... I'm SO glad to know you're still on Shelfari! I haven't been able to log onto Shelfari in months, but I finally settled into my new house and I'm back online after a few months away. I ended up moving again after looking for work in Northern California for the summer. I worked sporadically and ended up interviewing for 3 jobs, but the competition is really tough right now. The teaching situation in California is pretty bad.

I have moved to a small town near Yosemite National Park. My family owns some property up here and I'm really enjoying the location. The only draw-back is that the only Internet access I have is dial-up, and it takes forever to get anything done on the computer. The phone company is supposed to be putting in digital lines at the beginnning of the year, but we'll see how fast it actually gets done. LOL ...

How have you been? I hope your doing well and that life is treating you kindly. How's teaching and everything? Are you still studying as hard as ever? How is life in the Philipines?

I'm working with a friend of mine to actually try to teach in Asia sometime around the first of the year (February or so). He is a principal / supervisor at an English school near Hong Kong and he's been there for 3 years. I recently sent him my resume and he forwarded it along with a recommendation letter to his main office. I'm waiting to hear back from him and hoping I get approved. If I do, then I will most likely leave for China in January or February.

Please write me if you get a chance and let me know how you have been! I think of you all the time, but I know we live in separate parts of the world and it's not always easy to stay in contact. Still, I always love hearing from you! Take care. --G

So sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I have been really busy with school and have gotten a little bit lazy with emails and the internet in general. I hope all is well with you. I am sure you are very busy as well. Winter is coming here to New York!
I let the group go. I am not going to bother with it anymore, but I will still log on to check my notes!

Hi Emmylou! Thanks for the nice note!

To answer some of your questions:

1). As far as teachers in California are concerned, the state of California is over 26 billion dollars in debt! They've just managed to "pass a budget" but the state is still hurting big time.

I became expendable at my last school because they needed to cut 4 teaching jobs and I was the newest teacher at the school. They're simply moving one of their P.E. teachers into my English position (she also has an English degree), and going to use substitutes and para-professional teachers to fill the voids created by letting 4 teachers go. They will actually spend less money and have more bodies "teaching" or on staff; the question will be what kind of quality the kids receive in terms of education. Either way, I was the last teacher hired, and so I was the last not to be "re-hired." Technically, I was NOT terminated. I finished my contract (teachers here work on a year-to-year contract unless you have tenure). I did not have tenure at the school, and so after my contract was up (at the end of the school year) they were not obligated to bring me back.

2). I don't know much about Filipinos coming over here to teach (or the numbers of Filipino teachers, the level or types of classes that they teach). All I know is that there's a major difference between teaching here for a few years, and landing a tenured, full-time teaching position at the K-12 level. They are NOT giving those jobs away anymore; it's extremely competitive.

3). Forgive me if I may have mis-spoke in the past. I AM divorced, but I do not think of myself as ever having been "married" in the first place. It's a contradiction, I know, but I was married for less than 8 months. It was a bad decision I made with the wrong woman. I tend to block it out of my mind whenever possible! : )
I think she eventually filed for an annulment, and although I don't remember signing any annulment papers, she may have been able to get it anyway. I'm not a member of the Church; I'm not religious, and I don't know if the married was annulled or not. I spent less than 8 months of my 42 years technically "married" but most of that 8 months was a nightmare ... forgive me if I consider myself "single" and not divorced.

    4) I do hope you are well! It's been very nice having the opportunity to write you and talk to you on Shelfari and via e-mail from time-to-time. You strike me as a very kind, hard-working, and dedicated woman, so I'm happy that we're friends!

It's great that you will be on a break soon! Hopefully you will get some much-deserved rest and relaxation. Let me know how you are doing and have a terrific break, okay?
    Sincerely,
    --Greg

Hi! Thanks for responding and the friendship request. That would be great if you could send me some titles of books. My brother and I are first generation kids born in the U.S. of A. My dad is from Baguio and my mom is from Santiago, Ilocos Sur. I've been traveling to the Philippines since I was 2. I used to go home every year when I was younger; now I try to go home every 3 to 4 years. I prefer the province over the city anyday! What part of the Philippines do you live? Hope to hear from you soon.

    Hi Beautiful!

It was so great to hear from you again!, and your seminars sounded absolutely incredible! I wish I had been there to take part, but life in Cali. has been tough for me lately. I have no complaints, but am struggling to find full-time work as the economy tightens and the unemployment rate in California continues to grow. It's at 11.9 right now, and I'm looking for ANY decent job I can find.

I'm still loving life, and am happy I have my health and some security, but it's getting pretty rough! I've been looking to branch out into other occupations, since educational cut-backs have affected so many people in the state. I even have a friend who's trying to get me a job near the PHILIIPINES! Can you believe it?

I would definitely go and accept a job if one is offered! I have no kids of my own, I'm not married, and I would love the chance to travel and live somewhere outside the U.S., but it's only now in the starting stage, so I don't know what will happen. I have a few opportunities in Japan, China, and Guam ... but I won't know for sure what happens for several weeks. It's still very much a "work in progress!"

How have you been? Let me know how you're doing, okay? I worry about you and think of you ALL THE TIME!

I haven't been on Shelfari as much recently as I usually am, but I still think of you, and miss our conversations. Write when you have a chance. Talk to you soon?
