    Emmylou!
So sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I have been really busy with school and have gotten a little bit lazy with emails and the internet in general. I hope all is well with you. I am sure you are very busy as well. Winter is coming here to New York!
I let the group go. I am not going to bother with it anymore, but I will still log on to check my notes!
Be well and keep in touch!

Hi Emmylou! Thanks for the nice note!

To answer some of your questions:

1). As far as teachers in California are concerned, the state of California is over 26 billion dollars in debt! They've just managed to "pass a budget" but the state is still hurting big time.

I became expendable at my last school because they needed to cut 4 teaching jobs and I was the newest teacher at the school. They're simply moving one of their P.E. teachers into my English position (she also has an English degree), and going to use substitutes and para-professional teachers to fill the voids created by letting 4 teachers go. They will actually spend less money and have more bodies "teaching" or on staff; the question will be what kind of quality the kids receive in terms of education. Either way, I was the last teacher hired, and so I was the last not to be "re-hired." Technically, I was NOT terminated. I finished my contract (teachers here work on a year-to-year contract unless you have tenure). I did not have tenure at the school, and so after my contract was up (at the end of the school year) they were not obligated to bring me back.

2). I don't know much about Filipinos coming over here to teach (or the numbers of Filipino teachers, the level or types of classes that they teach). All I know is that there's a major difference between teaching here for a few years, and landing a tenured, full-time teaching position at the K-12 level. They are NOT giving those jobs away anymore; it's extremely competitive.

3). Forgive me if I may have mis-spoke in the past. I AM divorced, but I do not think of myself as ever having been "married" in the first place. It's a contradiction, I know, but I was married for less than 8 months. It was a bad decision I made with the wrong woman. I tend to block it out of my mind whenever possible! : )
I think she eventually filed for an annulment, and although I don't remember signing any annulment papers, she may have been able to get it anyway. I'm not a member of the Church; I'm not religious, and I don't know if the married was annulled or not. I spent less than 8 months of my 42 years technically "married" but most of that 8 months was a nightmare ... forgive me if I consider myself "single" and not divorced.

    4) I do hope you are well! It's been very nice having the opportunity to write you and talk to you on Shelfari and via e-mail from time-to-time. You strike me as a very kind, hard-working, and dedicated woman, so I'm happy that we're friends!

It's great that you will be on a break soon! Hopefully you will get some much-deserved rest and relaxation. Let me know how you are doing and have a terrific break, okay?
    Sincerely,
    --Greg

Hi! Thanks for responding and the friendship request. That would be great if you could send me some titles of books. My brother and I are first generation kids born in the U.S. of A. My dad is from Baguio and my mom is from Santiago, Ilocos Sur. I've been traveling to the Philippines since I was 2. I used to go home every year when I was younger; now I try to go home every 3 to 4 years. I prefer the province over the city anyday! What part of the Philippines do you live? Hope to hear from you soon.

    Hi Beautiful!

It was so great to hear from you again!, and your seminars sounded absolutely incredible! I wish I had been there to take part, but life in Cali. has been tough for me lately. I have no complaints, but am struggling to find full-time work as the economy tightens and the unemployment rate in California continues to grow. It's at 11.9 right now, and I'm looking for ANY decent job I can find.

I'm still loving life, and am happy I have my health and some security, but it's getting pretty rough! I've been looking to branch out into other occupations, since educational cut-backs have affected so many people in the state. I even have a friend who's trying to get me a job near the PHILIIPINES! Can you believe it?

I would definitely go and accept a job if one is offered! I have no kids of my own, I'm not married, and I would love the chance to travel and live somewhere outside the U.S., but it's only now in the starting stage, so I don't know what will happen. I have a few opportunities in Japan, China, and Guam ... but I won't know for sure what happens for several weeks. It's still very much a "work in progress!"

How have you been? Let me know how you're doing, okay? I worry about you and think of you ALL THE TIME!

I haven't been on Shelfari as much recently as I usually am, but I still think of you, and miss our conversations. Write when you have a chance. Talk to you soon?

    Hi Emmylou,
We have one mutual friend in common, The Literary Hammer (or G). I just happened to glance at one of your posts and was wondering if you could help me. I am very interested in Filipino folklore and mythology. If you don't mind me asking, what books did you use for your research? I haven't had much luck finding good books about the subject. Thank you for your help.

LOL....Emmy...between your Internet access (or lack) and mine...it's surprising we can keep in touch at all! LOL!

I know how busy you must be, but I really hope you're finding time to take care of yourself!--something tells me you are, you always seem so positive and up-beat no matter how tough tthings get. I admire you for that!

I have been running around like crazy also, neglecting most of my friends and my Shelfari shelves and really haven't had much time to get anything done...it feels like I'm spinning my wheels sometimes, but when I keep the larger picture in mind I do see that I'm accomplishing a few things. I have had the chance to visit with my family and "get away" lately (which is always nice) but there is still the pressure of finding a full-time, contracted teaching position for this coming year. I'm hoping that struggle will improve once again, now that the new school year is so close, and the California state budget has been "agreed upon."

I haven't had the chance to check all of my Yahoo mail for about a month now, but I plan to get to that (I hope) by this coming weekend. I still OWE YOU a "novel-like-letter"...so let's both just keep trying and it will get done--I'm sure of it.

How is teaching going? Are you getting any reading of your own done? Do you guys take ANY time off during the year, or do you teach year-round? I have NO idea what a teacher's schedule in the Philipines might be like! Are you still taking your own classes too? I know how busy you get...but I miss you and think of you often.

Please write when you find the time.

Take care....I hope you are well!

    Dear Emmy,
Hi! I'm so sorry it's been so long since I've been online and last wrote to you. I hope you're doing well and that manila and Life are treating you kindly! I have FINALLY been able to get Internet access at my apartment and get back onto Shelfari. It seems like I've been away forever...there have been so many changes.
How have you been? How are your studies going, and how is teaching treating you? I miss talking to you and hope we will be able to chat again soon. In the meantime, I thought I would write you a brief note and say "hello." I hope you're doing well. Talk soon?

Emmylou, thank you for the friend invite. I saw you read The Pretenders and it sounds very interesting. I recently returned from a trip to Singapore that left me very interested in the culture in that part of the world. I read that The Pretenders is part of a series of five books. Would I need to read them all or is it alright to just read the one book? I look forward to talking more.
