What can I say? One of the greatest books ever written.

While I admire the writer's command of English, and her ability to create haunting scenes, I didn't really start to warm up to this book until about page 120. Then, about 2/3 of the way through, it lost me again. The writing has lovely moments, but by the end of the book I was utterly baffled. I hear her other works are better.

I adore this book. I experienced it as Karen Savage's most excellent audiobook recording, which I got from Librivox (Pride and Prejudice version 03). Here's the URL:

I *highly* recommend this recording, which is free to stream or download. Her clear voice and delightful characterizations make this one of the best librivox offerings I know of.

  • Dracula
    • Rated 5 stars

I listened to the free librivox.org mp3 audiobook version of this work, and enjoyed it from beginning to end.

This is a very modern, thrilling tale which I recommend highly to anyone who enjoys Victoriana, science/fiction, fantasy, and horror. I loved the characters and their methodical battle agaisnt a supernatural enemy.

The biggest surprise for me, however, was how subtly erotic it was. Nobody does sexual tension better than the Victorian writers. And dark, dangerous, repressed sexuality serves this book very well in lending an emotional depth and turmoil.

I also recommend J. Sheridan Lefanu's "Carmilla", which preceded Dracula by 20 years and clearly influenced Stoker's work.

Carmilla, the book which inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula, is a shorter, more feminine and delicate work than that later masterpiece.

Both books are laden with repressed Victorian sexuality, but Carmilla fairly drips with implied lesbianism, and as such must have been quite shocking for its day.

Also, whereas Count Dracula is thoroughly frightening, Carmilla is undeniably alluring despite her predations. This makes her a more complex and nuanced character than the more-famous Count. Part of the lasting shock suffered by the heroine is due to her yearning to go where lovely Carmilla beckoned, even if it cost her life.

I strongly recommend the librivox.org audio recording of this book. It is read masterfully by Elizabeth Klett, and it can be downloaded for free and enjoyed on any mp3 player.

I greatly enjoy H. Rider Haggard's books, and Ayesha has become one of my favorite characters.

I think this was my favorite Gor book, out of all 26. I rather liked the first five, each one slightly better than its predecessor. The book before this one, Nomads, was also very enjoyable. But the next book (I'm given to understand it marks the beginning of the ghost-written part of the series) is of marked decline in quality.

This was my first contact with the Gor books, I read it in college and found it fairly captivating as a kind of erotic fantasy, though wholly unrealistic and poorly written.

I read Witness of Gor just so I could claim having read all 26 books in the series. It's that bad. And still...there are a few moments involving character development I enjoyed. It could have been worse, a little.
