Martina K

I spend most of my time with a book in my hands, either textbooks, as I teach German and English to adults, or novels in my free time. I have no preference of genres, but do have my favourite writers, e. g. Thornton Wilder to name but one.
As I'm fairly new to Shelfari, I haven't made any friends yet. I do hope that it will change soon.

Hey Martina...long time no talking...Haven't heard from you lately, although I haven't posted anything to you either. How have you been? Life here's been hectic as usual..what with work, traffic, family and so on.
I'm reading Pride and Prejudice in portuguese and even though the translation isn't so bad, I still find it weird to read in another language rather than english.
    Send me news of you!
Take care and keep in touch

P.S. I agree with you concerning Louisa May Alcott- she is too nice! It's interesting, but times have definitely changed!

    Hello Martina,
You asked about Colin Harrison; he writes mystery/urban thrillers usually centered about New York City. I was not as impressed with his latest offering as I was with some of his earlier books; particularly 'Bodies Electric" or " The Havana Room."

Hello Martina, I'm currently reading , "The Finder", by Colin Harrison, it's just OK; not as good as some of his earlier novels. I'm curious about Calamity Physics and Coffin for Dimitrios - I own both of them and haven't yet read them! Perhaps soon. I recently read the unabridged version of The Count of Monte Christo, and LOVED it! I'd read an abridged version years ago, never suspecting that my 700 page book was abridged. My book club choose "The Count" in a new 1200+ page edition, and I dreaded committing myself to such a hefty book, but now I'm glad I did - it's one of the best novels I've ever read! In fact, someone in the club remarked, "we might as well disband, we'll not read a better book this year." Alfred

Michelle

    Martina,
thanks so much for your note. I am doing fine, a little tired but happy enough to deal with that!!! I am sorry to hear you're not feeling good, and I hope you get better soon.
Unfortunately, I doubt I will be able to finish the book on time to participate to the book discussion becuuse I haven't even started yet... I will figure out what to do about it...
Take care, and hope you get better soon.

Liebe Gruesse

Hello Martina I am just about to finish 'The Scarlet Letter" I read it years ago..this time its making me angry as I see woman have not made much progress, Oh well guess things will not change until all young girls get educated and obtain well paying work, then maybe their Mothers can also teach them never to even think that a man should support them. Everyone should be able to look after him or her self. Enjoy your weekend.

    Hi Martina,
I just finished The Good Guy by Dean Koontz and really enjoyed it, and am reading Once Upon a Curse so my neice and I have a book in common on our shelves - and she picked that book as it is one of her favorites. Then (tomorrow probably) I will start reading The Beach House by James Patterson. What are you reading??

Hello Martina am not sure if you got my reply about 'should I read The Memeory Keeper". My reply was someone had given it to me as a gift. From th very start I found it hard to get into, it was predictable and if there was some message in the story I was not getting it. I never finished the book just guessed thr ending. Of course i could have been wrong about the ending but the book was not for me. Over the long weekend I bought and finished "Marley and Me" a must read for anyone who like animals. It is the true story of a Labrador/Retriever who it was impossible to train. It was a lovely uplifting story anyony who loves dogs and animals will love this book. I finished it last night but did not want it to end.Hope you are fine and life is being good to you, take care enjoy.Sheila

Martina I was just thinking of you today, finally our weather is nice and the last two days have been able to go out for my fast walk. I had back surgery in 2006 also have arthritis so am limited in what I can do, walking is fine so I fast walk for about one hour this gets my heart rate up and I have found it the best excercise for the female body, within a week I notice my waist bands are not tight and its great for the thighs and you get a nice flat stomach. My legs looked so good last year although I am 64 I was wearing shorts and I have no cellulite!..Now I am sitting on the deck my husband took today off to catch up on some garden work. Our garden is one acre much to big for us, he has most of it lawn and someone cuts it, before my surgery I would often get on the lawn tractor and do it myself. Saturday the weather was nice so just for exercise I cut the front with the hand mower, its power so not hard plus when my husband is out he like me out eith him to keep him company.Your holiday sounded wonderful you must have found it hard to go home, although sometimes when you reach home it feels good.I was thinking about you and all my shelfari friends because now summer is here I am sure most of us will want to be outside, plus I hardly get any reading done these days as I am always on line talking with friends, I do not want to lose you or anyone as we have all become such good friends. Maybe we can all come to an understanding that during the summer months we will keep in touch on a monthly basis. So if you do not hear from me do not worry I will be thinking of you and keeping in touch maybe not quite as often.Enjoy the summer and your summer reads, I have six books waiting to be read! Take care, Sheila

Well, if the English one is out I haven't seen it. But I don't go book shopping very often since I work in a library and have plenty of friends I can borrow books from. No, it's an answer; it tells me that the book has already been written, just not necessarily translated and re-published in the US or England. Thanks for the info.
