Hi Laurie, Many thanks for the belated birthday wishes. I haven`t read the Rhett Butler book. I just downloaded 3 books on kindle, only £3 for all of them. I won`t get rid of my books though, I am a terrible hoarder. I liked the look of one of the last books you read `The Mistake`,I will look out for that. I am currently really enjoying Patricia Highsmiths books and Patricia Cornwell. The weather has been very mild over here so far, lots of plants that normally shed their leaves in autumn haven`t done so, it is so strange. What is the weather like over there? There is an author that I am interested in amongst your books, but I cannot remember the name, I will have to go through your book list again. Happy New year to you and your family.

Happy New Year to you, as well! I've been on "vacation" (cleaning the house, cooking, cooking, cooking, family gathering) since the 17th of December! It has been wonderful and makes me long for the days when I will be all done with homework. I keep telling myself ONE MORE YEAR. One more. That's all that I really need to do. I keep thinking about going on to grad school or law school but I think after my undergrad, it will be time for a break and then hopefully I'll find a nice job. I've been reading the Game of Thrones series.. and I just love them. I'm on the last book now.. there are supposed to be two more after this I hear.. but it could be years before they come out. There was a six year gap between the last book and this one... so I'm just taking my time.. taking some breaths. My tax preparation internship starts on the 5th.. then my 5 other classes and work start again on the 9th. I'm probably going to be a crazy woman until about the end of April. :)

Hi Laurie, I was trying to reply to your previous message when I hit the wrong button on the laptop and the message disappeared. I wasn`t sure if it had gone through to you or not. Glad to see you are reading `devil in a blue dress`, hope you are enjoying it. My daughter gave me a kindle for my birthday in november, I have only downloaded free stuff so far. I have been enjoying a bit of american crime recently, although I never wanted to get into reading a lot of crime, it is very addictive. I hope you and your family have a lovely christmas and lots more reading for you in the new year.

I have read Little Women about 50 times. I'm reading the ebook of it now. It's a comfort book of mine. Life is chock full and I'm just tired. One more year after this, then I hope to slow down. A Game of Thrones is the first book in the series. I'm typing this from my phone so I apologize for any brevity! Take care

Hi Laurie, I have only just started `My Antonia` and love it already, my friend got it in a charity shop the other day. Glad you enjoyed `Ordinary thunderstorms`. His best books (that I have read so far] are `Brazzaville beach` and `Any human heart`, which was made into a tv series over here. He is very easy to read, and so is Sebastian Faulks, another british author that I like very much. It`s probably best to read the `Easy Rawlins` books in order. I haven`t come across any lately, but I am sure they will turn up one day soon. I agree about the strange ending in `ordinary thunderstorms`, as far as I know there is no sequel.
Coincidently we are supposed to be having a heatwave at the end of the week, which will be quite nice. Must go and feed the cats.

Hi Laurie,Glad you are enjoying the Kindle and the William Boyd book. My daughter is getting on really well with her Kindle. She has found quite a few free books on there that she fancies reading and a couple of things on there that she has paid for but they were under £1. She came to see me last week and bought it with her to show me, it is lovely, but I kept accidently pressing the buttons on the side. Maybe I will get one eventually. Right now I am trying to get through all the books on my shelf. My friend got me 3 more today. I shall have to move out soon to make room for the books. We seem to be having a late summer here, it has been really lovely here the last few days. Apparently the temperature is going to be up to 80 degrees next week which is good considering it is nearly autumn.

Hi Laurie, Hope you enjoy the William Boyd book. Weather keeps changing here, it was quite nice this morning but it is raining once again this afternoon. My youngest daughter came to visit this morning, she received a `Kindle` for her birthday, it`s very impressive. Maybe I will get one soon, hope you are getting along with yours ok. I have just started reading a book about a poor family in the early 1900`s, it`s really good. We sometimes think we have it hard but they had nothing in those days, but they appreciated what they had. Enjoy your books and your Kindle.

Hi Laurie, glad you found a William Boyd book. I havent read all of his books yet but the ones I have read are excellent. Hope Nadal won the finals, he lost the last match I saw him in. Weather strange here. I put my central heating on one day last week, then the next day it was like summer again. It`s very windy at the moment, but it has been quite sunny as well. Lot`s of things to do in the garden before the winter sets in, then I will be indoors most of the time reading. I cannot get to grips with gardening in the winter. Enjoy the books.

    Hi Laurie,
Loved looking at your list of books--the dazzling selections of a true reader. Got a kick out of all the mixture of western novels and all the Shakespeare I wish I'd read.
    All best,
    Karen

Hi Laurie, miserable wet weather here, it feels like winter. I tried listening to audio books but I seem to lose concentration, so I gave up. We still use cassettes here for music and taping and we still use videos. One day we won`t be able to buy them any more, which is a shame. That book that I have just read `The shadow of the wind` by Carlos Ruiz Zafon is wonderful, if you ever come across it, I would thoroughly recommend it.
I have got a lot of books still to read, but my friend is always in the charity shops and comes back with 3 or 4 books every time. I am running out of shelves to put them on. Hope you are enjoying the U S open.

Thank you, I will add it to the list! Everything's been great... but for some reason it seems like there are never any breaks - just time to get caught up on assignments! :D I can't wait to be able to read again!!!

Hi Laurie. You are right`Devil in a blue dress` is the first in the series. `A red death` is the next one. I am glad you avoided that awful weather, and wish you could send some of your sunshine here. Today has been quite cold and miserable. I have never been to America, I am sure if I went there I wouldn`t want to come back here. I quite like the Raymond Chandler detective books. The films are quite good too. So many wonderful books to read and films to watch and not enough time to do it all.
Joints are bad today, must go and find the `Arnica` cream.
    Happy reading.

Hi Laurie, What terrible weather conditions you are experiencing over there at the moment. It has poured with rain for days here, now it`s thundering and lightening. `Fearless Jones` is quite similar to `Devil in a blue dress`. I love the grittyness of these books. I need to get the first book in the `Easy Rawlins` series, and the others. What I am reading now is a complete contrast, very middle class english from the 20`s and 30`s. I am not really interested in sport, so I won`t be going to the olympics. Wimbledon is only about 5 or 6 miles from me, I sometimes watch tennis on tv if Rafael Nadal is playing. I have been using `Arnica` gel recently for my joints, it does help a bit. I have watched some Stephen King films on the tv, but I haven`t read any of his books. My eldest daughter has, I will have to borrow one from her. Oh well, I had better get back to `Barbara Pym`. Hope you don`t get any of that bizarre weather.

    Best wishes

Hi Laurie. I started reading `Fearless Jones`, it`s just as good as `Devil in a blue dress`. I will be 57 in a few months, sometimes I feel like 87, my joints are so stiff. Probably because of the damp climate here. Between the years 2000 and 2002, I moved 3 times, it nearly killed me, I have so much stuff. I am quite obsessive about all things American. My favourite artist is Edward Hopper and my favourite photographer is Walker Evans. I have the `Hopper prints on my living room wall and the Walker Evans next to the stairs and a poster of San francisco from the 1960`s in the living room. I think I was born in the wrong country. I see you have `Misery` on your shelf, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Happy reading (glad you have got a Kindle).
