Jym Donovan

I like to write, so if you see like my reviews...good. I am eclectic, but predicable to a point; anything sci-fi/fantasy, or rather my new favorite name for it: Speculative Fiction. At the urging of influential friends I've branched out into Fiction and even some, egad! Literature, i still mostly prefer sci-fi, which Neal Stephenson summed up... more »

    Compadre,
I'll admit I'm surprised to see Ken Follett books invade your shelf, I had him pegged as a "Clancyesque" author. Am I to presume this is not the case? That said, I've heard great things about "Pillars of the Earth" at school.

Well, quicksilver was fantastic. I made it halfway through King of the vagabonds, discovered the discrepency, and stopped. My local rural library actually has the confusion....so Im going to try that.

Jym, I am in the process of reading the Stephenson like we talked about aeons ago....explain to me where "King of the Vagabonds" and "Odalisque" fit into the series. Am I reading the novels in chronological order? Quicksilver, King of the Vagabonds, Odalisque....now what?

Love your description of Neal Stephenson's Quicksilver as "Nerd-Tastic." Exactly right! I'd love to hear what you think of the other two books, which I've just barely started. Other great Nerdtastic books: "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao," "The Fortress of Solitude," "The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing," and, of course, "The Amazing Adventures of Kavelier and Clay." I have worn Mjollnir for ten years now, but alas, my children broke mine. At present, I do not wear Mjollnir. On your other points I agree with you, naturallly. I do object to "myth", but I digress.

Jym, you should try Dave Eggers of the McSweeney folk. I think you might like if you like Chuck P.

Precisely.....Neo-lithic goombas! I must say...I need to give Stephenson another chance. I started to read "Quicksilver" but it seemed so obsessively researched that he was cramming too much down the proverbial throat. Is there a better starting point? Do I need to be more lenient?

Monsieur Donovan!....seems we are relegated to being Cyber Friends! Sad, in one sense...but in another, strangely appropriate. We were friends before there was technology, and now we exist together within it.
