    Hey Chelle,

    How goes it?

    Just started school this week and the body is exhausted but the mind is racing – overall it feels terrific to be back in the classroom.

    This summer my latest book was released – “Roam Italy: A Teacher and His Students Take the Ultimate Class Trip.” The book’s website is www.theclassroombook.com if you wanted to check things out.

    Possible tornado warnings in NJ this weekend so I best head for cover…

    Oh shoot. I thought I was being so smart! Now, more importantly, how did you get your picture? I tryed right clicking and it didn't seem like any of the options were available. I'll keep playing with it.
    Hey, have you done anything with the advisory stuff yet? I haven't even started. Time is slipping away. Make sure you turn in your pay for before tomorrow if you want to get paid in June.

    Hi, Chelle! Nice to hear from you again. I've been busy helping my sister with a scrapbook she's making for her friend's 50th bday. 50 pages, so you can imagine how swamped i am (not done yet...sigh). Recently, 2 friends of mine from a dragonboat rowing team asked me to paint on their jeans for their Christmas party "jazz up your jeans" contest (so '80s, i know). We won! I painted a real dragon instead of a boat with 2 rowers on it. And the design would be whole only when my friends stood side by side. Pretty cool. Had fun but it was a lot of work. I had migraine for a day.

    Good to hear you have time to read despite the tedious task of grading (tsk, tsk... you're a teacher!). Enjoy your books! And have a merry Christmas!

    Tornados seems scary. I've seen Twister, Where The Heart Is... scary. And i saw an Oprah episode (ahem) where they had on the show this family whose house was destroyed by a tornado, and their baby was blown away, crib and all. The baby was unharmed and found eventually, but i can't imagine the horror of that happening to me.
    You know, i think summer's are busier here. At least in my family. During school, there's the schoolbus that picks up the kids. In the summer, there aren't any. I have my kids attend attend some classes (last year it was street dancing and creative writing). I have to bring them to class myself and i don't drive. I get dizzy with the way most drivers drive, so while the kids are in class, i often have to nurse a headache. And other times, my father-in-law shows up and i have coffee with him while we wait for the kids. Can't read when he wants to chat.
    There's just never enough time to read anymore. Usually if i like a book, i can't put it down (i have burnt dinners to prove it).
    Gotta go. My sister's coming over to pimp me books again, i'm sure. Talk to you soon!

    Hahaha! It's nice to know even teachers get frayed nerves because of their own kids. That makes me feel so much better. I love my kids too but they just like to test me often about how much...
    It's raining here. My 6-year old was on the schoolbus already when his teacher sent me an SMS (i make it a point to be chummy with teachers, heheh) saying classes have been suspended. 3 minutes too late. Sigh. I hate it when that happens, which is 80% of the time. We have a gazillion typhoons here and we always wait for the Dept of Education to announce whether there are classes and on what levels. Usually they make the announcement when all the kids have gone to school. So the streets in Manila get flooded (not in Quezon City where i live--- thank god) flooded and you see these kids on the news wading through as deep as 3 feet of water to get back home. Always. I love Quezon City. They call it City of the Stars (which is a stupid name if you ask me) because a lot of actors and actresses live here, the TV stations are here, etc.
    So what's it like over there? You've never experienced a flood, have you?

    My sister's been recommending books to me and i haven't even picked up a single one. Water for Elephants, Kite Runner, Life of Pi, Tao of Pooh... Those are the titles that i'd like to read. But recently, she dumped 2 big bags of books on my lap. Stuart Woods, Jonathan Kellerman, Steve Martini, David Morrell, Tom Clancy stuff, books she doesn't read but got cheap at a booksale. You just have to love her. But i just don't have the time! My fervent wish is to have one week of not having to perform crowd control over the kids, a fresh pot of coffee without having to brew it myself and dinner that i didn't cook. If there's cheesecake after the dinner, so much the better. Sigh.
    Do you love being wife and mom all the time? Or are you a bit like me, going through the motions on some off days without your heart being totally in it?

    Wow, your school's getting a lot of recognition. You must feel awfully proud.
    I don't think i've ever experienced cranky kids because they see too little of me. Usually, it's because dinner isn't ready when they are, i've shortened computer play time as punishment for misbehaviour or their favorite shirts are still in the wash. Sigh. It's overwhelming. But luckily, The Hubby grants me a day off (a few hours, actually) each week, to talk to other people besides the kids, to keep me sane. I just had last night off and it was fun. Short-lived though. The Congress building was bombed, a Muslim congressman & 2 others died & a lot of people were hurt. As soon as my friends and i heard the news on the radio, we headed home. I live a few minutes away. Motherhood makes one paranoid, see. AND listening to the news.
    What about on your side of the globe? Everything quiet over there?

    OK, another question. Do you have an anthology? Are you going to need to duplicate all these stories? One place to start is looking at programs already in place, like the Junior Great Books program, just for ideas, not to buy (though the program is very fine). For example the 9th grade anthology has these titles: "Miriam" Truman Capote;
    "Zoo Island" Tomás Rivera;
    "At the Pitt-Rivers" Penelope Lively;
    "New African (from Sarah Phillips)" Andrea Lee;
    "Sponono" Alan Paton;
    "Bobby's Room" Douglas Dunn;
    "A Bird in the House" Margaret Laurence;
    "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" Robert Louis Stevenson;
    "The Little Cousins" Peter Taylor;
    "The Idealist" Frank O'Connor;
    "The Time Machine" H. G. Wells. You might have some stories that everyone reads and discusses together or writes about, and some that are self-selected or discussed in small groups. I also like the short story anthology called "You've Got to Read This" edited by Ron Hansen. Pick some edgy ones - older kids really like slightly more "adult" stories. You might consider having some of the stories be classics, available online for free, if buget issues are part of your consideration.

    Hello! You probably know that I'm a retired English teacher. I enjoyed teaching, but also love my days now that I have time to read, paint, and sometimes work out. I'm adding you as a friend, and I hope you'll write some reviews of the books you finish so I know what you think of them.
