Memory book and Hero Book
Memory book Is a tool that is used to capture ones history and important life events to show how ones identity was shaped and formed. This approach also aims at setting up a safe space facilitates the telling, retelling and reconstruction of stories about ones life. Its main orientation often tends to be towards planning for the future. This approach acknowledges and reinforces the capacity people have to survive and celebrate life in the midst of challenges. It cements the relationships between the children and the caretakers and creats a platform for the adults to share the dreams, aspirations, hopes and wishes they have for their children so ] that even when they die, the children remain connected to them. Hero Book
Hero book is a document and a process in which a child is invited to be the author, illustrator, main character and editor of a book that is designed to give him/her power over a specific challenge in life. In developing a Hero book, the child uses drawing exercises and autobiographical story telling to express him/herself. The child uses this to discuss the challenges, problems and how sometimes he/she overcomes them. At the end of the process, the child will have a hand bound story book of their own making that reinforces his/her Hero- survival- resilient qualities. Solution Focused Approach. (SFA) Solution focused approach to counseling is the opposed of the traditional mode of counseling that pinpoints the origin of the client's problems and the relationship with the current difficulties. This mode of counseling places the counselor as an expert in searching client’s problems and primary task was to find the solutions that suit the counsellors understanding of what was needed to solve the assessed problem. The counselor elaborated the plan which was to be implemented by the client. With SFA, the client is an expert, resourceful and much energy is invested on solution building process rather than the problem. The counsellor empowers the client to develop simple and realistic goals in life basing on the God given resources (inner resources) and those in the external environment. Narrative Therapy This is one of the counseling tool whose focus is on helping the clients that have gone through traumatic life experiences find a different territory of identity like a river bank on which a person stands to look back at the dominant story. This helps a person to develop and describe a second story. One is able to trace the history of what is valuable and precious that is linked to the family, relationship, church, school, community etc. The voices of the loved ones are brought forth and a person develops new sense of direction, hope and optimism in life. I tested this personally and my life never remained the same! The lives of the children and the staff that have administered this to children have equally changed.
