Born and raised near London, I’ve lived half my life overseas since leaving home as a teenager.
Initially a reluctant Chartered Accountant, I soon moved professions and developed into being a designer and implementer of computer systems. This career took me to various countries in Europe and the Far East.
My wife Jo and I live much of the time in a 150-year-old finca in the small village of Jesus Pobre in Valencia, a pueblo most of Spain has never heard of. We ran a successful internet real estate business for eight years but when the property recession hit Spain I looked for other interests.
While exploring my ancestry I found my family had fought in the Opium Wars, the Crimean, India and Spain. With my interest in history aroused I returned to writing, and having written some short stories over the years – two of which are now to be published, I thought I’d try something more ambitious.
My ten years living in the Far East was one of the best experiences in my life, so I chose Shanghai in the 1930's as a city with all the ingredients for a fascinating story. My life in Asia meant I experienced everything from working for an old British trading company and what it was like to be an expatriate in a Chinese environment, to all the noise, smells and sounds of this magical part of the world.
I researched Shanghai and the triads for over a year and completed the A Circle Has No End which I have now released as an eBook. It is part of a trilogy and information can be found on my web site www.tony-henderson.com. The blurb is
Shanghai, 1936.
Davina Guest, a young and feisty Taipan, must help steer the family trading house through tumultuous times. The imminent Japanese invasion and the rise of Communism threaten her beloved company, but unbeknown to her, a far more deadly menace lurks in the shadows.
As heir to the Sung Society, Joseph Cheung must learn the ways of the triad. Vice and violence dominate Shanghai’s criminal world, but it is a personal vendetta that drives Joseph to risk the future of his ancestor’s society.
Shanghai, the Paris of the East, plays backdrop to the drama, as two families find their lives are circling each other in a dangerous world – and ultimately come to realise that a circle has no end.
