I am a children's book author and lover of exceptional books for children, especially preschool through middle grade readers. Ones that are both visually and verbally enticing are the ones I track. Shelfari offers a convenient place for me to make note of recent releases with notes about what I found appealing about the book. It offers a ready... more »

    One for the Murphys

Carly is a foster child and doesn't understand why her foster child would be nice and want to take care of her and why she is so loving to her own kids. Gives great perspective from a foster parent and from the foster child.

To say this book has changed my life would be a gross understatement. By changing my eating habits, as described in this book, I have lost more than one fourth of my body weight (seventy pounds). I feel healthy and great, better than I have felt in many, many years. I am tremendously enjoying the foods that I eat, and I never starve. I don't think it can get better than this.

I am convinced this book can do the same for you, but I have to emphasize I have changed what I eat. If you want to lose weight you cannot eat the things that made you overweight and expect to see a change. When written, that seems obvious, but many of us are hoping to do just that or some close substitute and miraculously lose weight.

The Art of Doing: How Superachievers Do What They Do and How They Do It So Well

When I picked up this book I wasn't sure I'd like it. Boy was I wrong. There is something in this book for everyone. The authors asked forty-three people who have distinguished themselves in someway how they did it; these are very diverse individuals. Whether or not I liked the person or his or...

The authors asked forty-three people who have distinguished themselves in someway how they did it; these are very diverse individuals. Whether or not I liked the person or his or her field of endeavor, I learned something from everyone of these people. It was fascinating to see how each applies the art of doing.

This is a good overview of plant life on earth. The book is targeted to a young audience and does a great job of providing a fair amount of information without being overwhelming. It is also informative for someone interested in the plant life so critical to our own survival on this planet. It defines what a plant is, the parts a plant can have—some genetic information, how plants reproduce, what habitats plants live in, and much more. The book is full of colorful, detailed pictures with descriptive captions.

The Storytelling Animal: How Stories Make Us Human

The title of this book caught my attention. Humans learn things more effectively when information—fictional or nonfictional—is shared in the form of a story or a game. I'm interested in how to weave a good story. This book gave several insights to the process, but also went down what I felt were tangents. Like how the human mind will fabricate stories from a limited amount of information in order to make sense of something that happened, or what dreams mean. Some of these were interesting; some strayed farther from storytelling than was interesting for me. Gottschall addresses all areas of storytelling which includes eroticism. There may be some brief sections that are offensive to some individuals.

More Bears! by Nesbitt, Kenn (2010)

This is a cute story that has no bears in it. Well, it starts out with no bears in it. And, eventually it ends with no bears in it; I can't speak for the middle of it.

    Watching The Words

I received my BSEE from Clarkson University in 1995 and spent the next 16 years working in the engineering field. Feeling unfulfilled by my career, in 2009 I announced to my husband that I was going to go back to school to get my degree in library science. Why? Definitely not for the power or...

    The dogs of winter

Very compelling book where I couldn't put it down, but very disturbing to see the based on a true story of a 5 year old discarded into the cruel, cold world of Russia on his own and how he survived. No child should ever go through all that. Very disturbing to read.
