WMHF: Renegade – Synopsis
When Man Has Fallen Renegade is a tale of an ordinary young man forced into extraordinary circumstances – to live, he must become a killer, of the most ferocious kind.
The story itself is told in fragmented pieces, towards the beginning, with clear transitions back and forth between current and past perspective, drawing the reader onward while also divulging the past events that led to the current state of affairs, namely – invasion by a malevolent alien race, hellbent taking over Earth’s most abundant resource: Us.
The Yahntil are a wandering space race, bio-genetically engineered by an ancient race of primarily peace loving biologically oriented aliens, whom are only ever referred to as ‘The Ancients.’ The Ancients unwittingly destroyed themselves when one insane individual came into the possession of a weapon of world ending power. Nothing is known of this weapon or war, it is only known that The Ancients were left crippled, barren and unable to survive on their homeworld.
In desperation to continue their species, they created the Yahntil – The Little Ones – small, parasitic organisms designed with the sole purpose of infecting alien lifeforms with a powerful retrovirus which would change them into something similar to the race of The Ancients.
After endowing the Yahntil with their first ships and great stores of knowledge, they released them, millions upon millions of intelligent parasites into the galaxy.
The first world the Yahntil targeted was not far away – it was subjugated within the lifetime of the creating species – horrified by what they had done, the creators created a second race – The Liyran – Destroyers. These massive killing machines were sent in every direction that the Yahntil had been. Four touched down on the planet that the Yahntil had successfully subjugated – every last Yahntil was annihilated and the planet torched.
This sparked a war between the Yahntil and the Liyran – The Ancients being long dead. Only several hundred Liyran were able to be grown before the last Ancient passed away – not enough to stem the horde of Yahntil. The Yahntil spread like a plague, and one by one, the Liyran fell. After nearly a million years, the Yahntil reached Earth, on Dec. 21st, 2012.
Silas was not a believer in the Mayan prophecies. He didn’t believe in anything. He was agnostic – scoffing at any and all silly theories about fate and destiny, not knowing that he himself had one.
Shortly after the Alien invasion, he is forced to learn quickly – his best friend Lucas becoming infected and hunting him down like a rabid dog, Silas was forced to murder his best friend of fifteen years in cold blood with a butcher knife. The moment forever changes him.
Having a natural fighting spirit and a measure of Charisma, Silas quickly found himself at the head of a caravan of survivors heading for Chicago, the city rumored to be the new capital of the United States, spared for some reason by the advancing scourge.
Traveling with him are his sister and his brother and mother. Stopping at an abandoned convenience store for supplies proves fatal for Silas, his mother and sister. Silas’ mother and sister become trapped inside, and upon going in, he discovers they are infected and has to kill them. However, before he can escape, he is bitten by his dying mother and chooses to stay inside the now burning building and set off a grenade, sealing his own doom. While lying on the ground dying, his body is happened upon by a young individual of the Yahntil species, who is also dying, Linnerat. Taking a chance, Linnerat infects Silas, and through the healing powers of the infection, they both live.
However, through an odd twist of genetic mishap – Linnerat is not a true parasite, but a symbiote. Silas is in full control of his faculties, and through his leukemia, he too is able to become a ‘Changeling,’ an alien being which can appear as a man or alien at will.
Going into hiding, Silas lies low for years, helping out communities and fighting his internal demon until his eventual outing in his current community that he resides through an angry outburst at the murder of a little girl.
Fleeing from the city with the girl’s body, he is happened upon by two other individuals – Ava and Ragger, a human and a hellhound, who witness him burying the little girl. Ragger attacks Silas, claiming that he could not exist. After a brief struggle and acquaintances, the two parties make an uneasy alliance and travel back to the city to gather Silas’ belongings, which could prove useful. Along the way, Silas discovers that Ava is a half human hybrid of sorts, the bug in her head being dead, she can be used to contact the hive, but it cannot connect to her. Ragger is revealed to be a Renegade – an Alien who has given up the cause.
After collecting Silas’ belongings, the quartet begin heading towards Chicago once again, as Silas has slowly been making his way there ever since losing his caravan.
Many dangers and friends and enemies wait along the path to Chicago – Silas and Ava develop deep feelings for one another. They pass through the ruins of Silas’ old home city, and find a colony of humans and aliens living together in Harmony and peace – and it begins to dawn on them that a different future could exist for their species. Ragger reveals that his true name is Anubis, and he has been an inhabitant of Earth for nearly six thousand years. Human-alien hybrid children are introduced. Silas meets and loses an old friend, eliciting a breakdown. Ragger reveals that there is a prophecy surrounding the creature that Silas has become, that he has a destiny.
After a stop in an abandoned town it is revealed that Ava is a traitor and has been from the beginning, though her feelings for Silas are true – Lucas is still alive and in full control of his mind, Silas inadvertently killing the bug in his mind and driving him insane. Lucas nukes the town that Silas and Ragger are in and both he and Ava believe that Silas is now dead.
Lucas kills a Judge and assumes command of the Citadel, believing that Silas, his biggest obstacle to conquering Earth is out of his way – Ava escapes to find Silas, who she feels escaped the blast. An alien hybrid child finds Silas and Ragger, Ava catches up with them just outside the gates of Chicago. Upon entering Chicago, Silas found that his brother and the rest of his caravan survived. Book one ends.
