“Well, this is the first book in which I hoped that everyone would be arrested by the end of it. The book starts out with Ponyboy (his real name) getting beat up by a group of rich kids called the Socs. Ponyboy's "Greaser" friends show up to save him. Later they shoplift at a convenience store (these are our heroes, people) and sneak into a cinema were they meet two Soc girls. This pisses off their boyfriends, who the group fends off. Ponyboy then sleeps under the stars with his friend Johnny. This causes Ponyboy to come home late and gets yelled at by his brother, Darry, so he runs to a park with Johnny. There, they are attacked by the Socs. One of them tries to drown Ponyboy, but Johnny stabs him. The other Socs run in terror, and the Greasers have a burst of stupidity by deciding to run away instead of going to police saying they did it in self defence. With help from Dally, they leave the city and hide in a church near a small town. They play cards and read Gone With The Wind to pass the time. A few weeks later Dally picks them up, explains that they're wanted, and takes them to a Dairy Queen, where Johnny decides to turn himself in using self-defence (which probably won't work because he waited too long). On the way back, they see that in another flash of stupidity, they dropped a cigarette on the floor of a WOODEN CHURCH.(what's funny about this is that Ponyboy says he gets good grades in school.) Anyway they rescue some kids trapped inside, but Johnny breaks his back in the process. To make matters better (oh, I'm sorry, I mean worse) Ponyboy and his brother Sodapop (what parents are cruel enough to give children names like these?) have to appear before a court to see if they should be put in a boys home (which is probably a good idea). The Greasers beat the Socs in a final battle, Johnny dies from his injury, which causes Dally to rob a store, and pull a fake gun on police, who retaliate by returning fire. So, Ponyboy and Sodapop get to stay with Darry, and Ponybob writes this book so he can pass English in school. The end. It's funny that in this age where schools think tag is too violent, this book is a required reading. The main problem I have with this book is that all the characters are criminals. No matter how much the author says that they're misunderstood or something like that, they're all just criminals.”
