This book is about how the Gaza strip is going through the first Intifada. The main character is named Malaak and her family goes through a lot of things. First her father pasted away because an Israeli bomb killed him. Then the Israelis start to put a curfew on the Palestinians and start the close schools because there are to many deaths in the Gaza strip. The climax of this book is when a soldier shoots her brother in the head because he was throwing stones at the soldier. The ending of this book was not the most exciting thing because Malaak is just thinking about her father and her brother is still in the hospital and he's in a coma. The conflict wasn't really solved because her brother just ended up living and in a coma. The theme of this book was like drama because all of the conflicts that happened throughout the book. I kind of disliked this book because there was only one interesting part in this book and that was the climax and because this book didn't really have a good ending. This book wasn't confusing at all, this book is hard to read except the words that are in the Palestinian language. This book was very predictable, because each chapter kind of gave hints about what the next chapter was going to be about. I didn't like the ending because is wasn't a change to the rest of the book and it didn't leave the reader hanging. The only part of this book that I liked was the climax of this book. Well I can't really connect to the book, but other stories that I read other massages about the Gaza strip and how the Israelis were taking over the Palestinians land and started to put curfews.
I would recommend this book to someone who wants learn a little bit about the first Intifada, and to people that want to learn something new about Palestine. I would rate this book a 5, because there wasn’t any exciting parts that you would actually look forward of reading. But there is one part in the book that wants you to keep reading and that part is when Malaak’s (the main character) brother get shot in the back of his head and for throwing stones at a Israeli soldier, and everything goes by fast and that’s the climax. And that’s my review on A Stone In My Hand.

The setting of this story is in Afghanistan at night is when the main part of the story. the main characters are Fadi, Habid the dad, Mariam the sister and Noor the other sister. when fadi and his family had to leave kabul because of all the things the taliban were doing to the people and his mom was very sick and in kabul they dont have the right medicine to help her. so they decided to catch the truck that comes to u.s.a but when fadi and his family were getting on the truck a rush of people came and fadi was holding his sister but her hand slipped when she was grabbing her bear. and he lost her so after that in the story fadi was blaming his self after fadi and his teacher went to a muesam and meat a man who was rich he found saw picture of fadi and his family and asked where is that girl and he said he lost her so he donated money for her to come america where fadi now lives when she came back everyone was waiting for her outside the airport .
I think this book could have been better the auther should have added more deatails but take away deatails and unessary parts and this book was very predictable you could have guess every part of the book because it would have a part where eveyone is sad and blaming their selfs and other moments where fadi was like i will do a fundraiser or i will enter this compition and then nevery talk about it again in the hole story. most of the book was about fadi and noboby else just parts were focused on only fadi witch i did not like at all. the ending was not even believable like i said before it was just predictable, it started like halfway when it was predictable also it was a boring story it didt have to much action or sad moments. But it did have some great parts when mariam got left behind i could feel all the chracters emotions and feeling and when fadi didt win the compition i know what it feels like to lose something you really wanted to win.
i would recommend this book because it gives you a chance to relate or connect but you kind of decied the story because its pretty predictable. i would rate this book a 3 out of ten because i dont think there were too many falling action rising action and it skipped parts the book has one chapter of a diffrent topic it also mentions the main charaters but only talks abot one of them.

In the begguing of the book they left their house at night in order to not get caught by the Taliban. they used all of their money in the process of sneaking into pakistan to use their airports. like bribing the boarder guard, getting the ride to the airport in the van and the air plane tickets. And after they crossed the boarder and go to the van they were all rushing to get on to the van but Mariam draped her doll in the back of the van and the Taliban came so when they came sudently the van speed up and Mariam flew out and was left behind with many other people.

Pravana's family decide, Parvana would be the one to support the family since woman aren't allowed outside. This is the hardest decision parvana family had to make, but they have no choice. Parvana' mother worries about Parvana and if she get caught Parvana's family can only hope for the best for pavana and her father.

I liked this book because it show point of view of how woman in Afghanistan feel. I thought the book was very exciting and sad. My favorite part is when Parvana's father finally returns. The ending to me was a little confusing but overall it was really good.
i would recommend this book to people who want to learned about woman of life in afghanistan. for rating i would give this book a 9.5, beacause

Summary: In this book, the main character, Karim, fights with his brother and some friends to survive. Even though it is hard, Karim will not give up his life and dream. He has been shot twice, and his brother has been shot once, but hurt more than that. Then, he finds out about this big empty lot, perfect for a soccer field. So he will use this as an advantage, to fulfill his dream of becoming a famous soccer player.
Opinion: To me, this book is really boring. It seems as if even the action parts, are not full of action. For example, Karim got shot twice, but it was not exciting. I also do not like this book because it is written in 3rd person, which do not like.
Recommendation: Overall, I would not recommend this book to other people because I know that I am not the only person that dislikes this book, because the other people in my group do not like it. From 1-10, I would rate this book a 3 because I just really did not enjoy this book. it had no excitement and nothing to think about. They never killed off Jamal which was the only thing I could predict. You also couldn't evan make any inferences, not only because there were no clues of "Show not tell" cases. But even if you did have information, it would tell you the things anyway. If you got clues that maybe you thought "Jamal is a troublemaker," well then in the next paragraph it would probably say, "Jamal is a troublemaker." So I do not recommend this book to anyone who wants a book that will get their brains working.

Chris kyle, former Navy Seal, and the man with the most recorded sniper kills in US History, explains his experience, as a Navy Seal. although it is a great book, at times, it isn't written very well. which i guess can be expected, considering he's a Seal, not a famous author. but this is a good suspenseful book, and i would recommend it. Shabanu is a book about a young girl. Life is hard for women in Pakistan. Shabanu always had to wear a head scarf and couldn’t do much. Soon she is coming of age, once the women come of age they are basically forced to get married. Shabanu’s sister has already came of age and has to marry Hamir. Phulan loves Hamir so much until bad things come and Hamir gets killed. A land lord named Nazir- Muhammad was about to force Phulan to marry him. Shabanu got nervous and threw water onto the group of landlords. Nazir- Muhammad got in a fight with Shabanu’s father, Hamir and other men. Hamir died and Phulan had to get married to Murad who was supposed to be Shabanu’s husband. Shabanu had not came to age at that point in time but they still had wedding plans for her. Shabanu now was forced to marry Rahim- Sahib who was a 50 year old man with many lives. Shabanu did nit want to throw her life away to some man that could be old enough to be his grandfather. Once Shabanu came to age she hid the fact that she had the ability to create babies. She hid that fact for a couple of months until her father found out and beat her with a large stick. Shabanu didn’t care what was going to happen, she new that there was nothing she could do to stop. In the end Shabanu decided that she will never let a man take charge of her life and does what she is told.
Personally I loved the book. I know a lot of people that liked it and a lot of people that hated it. It was confusing at some parts but you just have to read slower and pay very good attention. The only thing I didn’t like a bout the book Shabanu was that I felt like the author spent a lot of time adding detail to the non important parts. I also felt like she rushed thought the important parts like the climax and resolution, this made the book get a little boring but I still thought the book was a good read.
I would recommend this book to anyone that was willing to take a challenge at my age as a 6th grader, also the person I would recommend Shabanu to HAS to be mature. This book has many parts to it that you have to be mature about. If I were going to rate this book I would probably give it a 7 out of 10, with 10 being the best book and 1 being the worst. I would give it this rate because I thought it was a very interesting good book that could get boring at some times. For example I felt like the author added way to much detail to the part of when Shabanu is helping a camel give birth, and the author rushed through the part of when Hamir died. When Hamir dies it is very important because it changes the whole story I felt like that was the climax and when Shabanu helped the camel it didn’t relate to the story. That’s how I felt of this book.

This book was touching and heart breaking that was because women are treated as if they are animals in the Middle East. The Taliban is a militia group that treats those women as animals. The rules are that the Taliban enforces us that they can't leave the house unless they are by their husband or a male. This book is mainly about a 11 year old girl named Parvana that tries to support her family but, unfortunately her dad had gotten his leg blown off by a bomb and after that incident he wound up in jail. Since her dad is in jail and no one else can tend to the family, parvana has to be brave and sell goods under her own risk. Since the Taliban don't like girls unattended parvana has to be disguised as a boy to sell goods to provide money. If the Taliban catches parvana being disguised as a boy then she would get shot! There was a mysterious woman that was giving gifts to pervana out of a window. Parvana was curious to see who it was. So later that night parvana had gone into the mysterious house and discovered a secret...
I would recommend this book to anybody that likes sad but inspirational books about people living during a hard time but tries to get by. This book was not that difficult to read and I gave these three stars because I didn’t really like the topic. My opinion on this book is an action packed book but also very sad. That is because woman have no rights and allot of those people are living in a poverty. The only way to get by is to sell their own goods that haven’t been blown up by bombs.

On the way to america they lose Mariam and then Fadi goes on a hunt looking for his sister before the Taliban catch her. When they finally move to america the 9/11 terrorist attack happens causing problems for the family. Two kids Ike and Felix start bullying Fadi because the high jackers are muslim and so is Fadi. N.H. Senzai did a great job making this book. It is powerful in many ways. I recommend this book to readers interested in middle eastern books and different genre. Im X.D. Shabanu is a book about a girl named Shabanu who lives in the Cholistan dessert. Life isn’t always easy for her. Shabanu is Muslim and in their culture lots of people get married at a really young age. Her sister Phulan is Going to get married really soon. But when a tragic death occurs, Will Shabanu have to give up her happy Marriage to help her sister? Shabanu has to get married to a man who is 40 years older than her. It’s not her decision. Just as you think it is not going to get any worse, Phulan and Shabanu encounter and strange and horrible visit with the landlord Nazir-Muhamid, this encounter could scar them for life. To not have to face this horrible fate, Shabanu runs away to go live with her her aunt and uncle, Sharma and Fatima. But Shabanu just has to except her fate and learn to live with it.
I didn’t really enjoy this book that much. Even though the book was very well thought out and descriptive, the story line was flat. It wasn’t really about just one thing and it was kind of confusing. The book was descriptive about parts that didn’t need to be, the little details, but the most important part, the conflict, was not explained in depth and was kind of confusing. The book didn’t really have one conflict it had multiple. The books ending wasn’t the best ending out there. I didn’t like the ending it was to boring and the book just suddenly came to a halt and just ended like that, out of nowhere. This was definitely not my favorite book.
I would recommend this book to people who like learning about Muslim culture. This book talks a lot of their culture. I also recommend this book to book groups because there are lots of things to discuss. I would recommend this book to ages 11+ because there is some suggestive dialogue and the book has some parts that would not be appropriate for 10 year olds and younger. That’s why I would recommend ages 11+. If u gave this book a star review then I would give it 2 stars, because even though I didn’t like the story line, the author used really good language to describe things and did a great gob putting in detail and imagery.

The book I read for the Middle East unit was a Stone in my hand. The story takes place in the Gaza strip. The main character is named Malaak , She lives with brother Hamid, her sister Hend and her mom and dad. Her dad leaves to find a job when he leaves Malaak waits for her dad on her roof. Later on in this book they find out the dad got bombed and sadly died. The climax was when Malaak brother Hamid gets shot in the head and he lives. I thought the book was good but I didn’t like the ending you don’t find out what happens to any one in the family it ends were Hamids in the hospital and he’s in a coma. It would be better if you foynd out what happened to Hamid. My favorite part was the climax it really wanted you to keep reading the book. This book really could happen to any family in the Middle East from research I did on the Middle East. The book gave really good detail. Like the setting and when the dad left them. Some connection I made with this book was that people that live in the Middle East go though this stuff everyday. I would recommend this book to anyone that’s want to learn more about the middle east from a 1 to 10 rating I would give it a 7.5 the ending wasn’t vey good it doesn’t leave off at a good place. It would be better if they told us what happen to Hamid and does he or doesn’t. Some quotes form the climax “Hamid fell on to me.” “Its all my fault if I only gotten to the roof sooner.” All in all the book was pretty good and I would really try to read it.

The book "A Little Piece of Ground" takes place in present day Palestine. Currently Palestine is at war with Israel over territory. Israel has terrorized and enforced curfews on Palestine. The main character Karim lives in Palestine with his parents, brother, and two sisters. One day Karim meets a mysterious boy that goes to his school who calls himself Hopper. Hopper takes Karim to an empty plot of land by his home and the refugee camp. Their plan is to rebuild this place so they can play soccer on it. They begin to rebuild it. Karim goes with his family to visit his grandparents house out of town. A unfortunate incident with a group of Israeli settlers enrages Karim and his hate for the Israelis grows stronger. He then returns. In a bomb hoax planned by Hopper, Karim, his best friend Joni, and Hopper, bond and become a friendship of three. Together they rebuild the land that they now call "Hoppers Ground" and play soccer and hang out with each other there. When the three finally get other kids to play soccer with them, a curfew comes right in the middle of the game. The other boys escape, but Karim is forced to take refuge in a broken down car. For two days he is trapped with nothing but soda to drink, and stray cats to keep him company. On the third day he is mislead to believe the curfew has ended. As soon as he steps out of the car he is shot in the leg. Stumbling to a safe place he gives up. His brother Jamal finds him and takes him to the hospital. He returns home after the curfew is up. He and his brother are treated like heroes and all is well again.
I thought that “A Little Piece of Ground” was a good book that really shows what it is like in that area in such a war-heated time. I believe that the development of each character was strong and the characters themselves are believable. The story contained the right mixture of humor and action. I can’t recall ever reading a particularly boring chapter. The ending was very climactic and happy and I wished that their was more to read.
I would recommend this book to any ages over the age of ten. Younger children would not understand some of the deeper themes of the book and the overall setting is intense.
