This book is about how the Gaza strip is going through the first Intifada. The main character is named Malaak and her family goes through a lot of things. First her father pasted away because an Israeli bomb killed him. Then the Israelis start to put a curfew on the Palestinians and start the close schools because there are to many deaths in the Gaza strip. The climax of this book is when a soldier shoots her brother in the head because he was throwing stones at the soldier. The ending of this book was not the most exciting thing because Malaak is just thinking about her father and her brother is still in the hospital and he's in a coma. The conflict wasn't really solved because her brother just ended up living and in a coma. The theme of this book was like drama because all of the conflicts that happened throughout the book. I kind of disliked this book because there was only one interesting part in this book and that was the climax and because this book didn't really have a good ending. This book wasn't confusing at all, this book is hard to read except the words that are in the Palestinian language. This book was very predictable, because each chapter kind of gave hints about what the next chapter was going to be about. I didn't like the ending because is wasn't a change to the rest of the book and it didn't leave the reader hanging. The only part of this book that I liked was the climax of this book. Well I can't really connect to the book, but other stories that I read other massages about the Gaza strip and how the Israelis were taking over the Palestinians land and started to put curfews.
I would recommend this book to someone who wants learn a little bit about the first Intifada, and to people that want to learn something new about Palestine. I would rate this book a 5, because there wasn’t any exciting parts that you would actually look forward of reading. But there is one part in the book that wants you to keep reading and that part is when Malaak’s (the main character) brother get shot in the back of his head and for throwing stones at a Israeli soldier, and everything goes by fast and that’s the climax. And that’s my review on A Stone In My Hand.

The setting of this story is in Afghanistan at night is when the main part of the story. the main characters are Fadi, Habid the dad, Mariam the sister and Noor the other sister. when fadi and his family had to leave kabul because of all the things the taliban were doing to the people and his mom was very sick and in kabul they dont have the right medicine to help her. so they decided to catch the truck that comes to u.s.a but when fadi and his family were getting on the truck a rush of people came and fadi was holding his sister but her hand slipped when she was grabbing her bear. and he lost her so after that in the story fadi was blaming his self after fadi and his teacher went to a muesam and meat a man who was rich he found saw picture of fadi and his family and asked where is that girl and he said he lost her so he donated money for her to come america where fadi now lives when she came back everyone was waiting for her outside the airport .
I think this book could have been better the auther should have added more deatails but take away deatails and unessary parts and this book was very predictable you could have guess every part of the book because it would have a part where eveyone is sad and blaming their selfs and other moments where fadi was like i will do a fundraiser or i will enter this compition and then nevery talk about it again in the hole story. most of the book was about fadi and noboby else just parts were focused on only fadi witch i did not like at all. the ending was not even believable like i said before it was just predictable, it started like halfway when it was predictable also it was a boring story it didt have to much action or sad moments. But it did have some great parts when mariam got left behind i could feel all the chracters emotions and feeling and when fadi didt win the compition i know what it feels like to lose something you really wanted to win.
i would recommend this book because it gives you a chance to relate or connect but you kind of decied the story because its pretty predictable. i would rate this book a 3 out of ten because i dont think there were too many falling action rising action and it skipped parts the book has one chapter of a diffrent topic it also mentions the main charaters but only talks abot one of them.

This book takes place in the Cholistan desert in pakistan. Shabanu lives with her mom, dad, sister, aunt, cousins, and grandfather. The conflict is that Phulan's wedding plans get ruined, and Shabanu is forced to marry a 55 year old. Before the climax, shabanu's grandpa dies, and they sell their camels. In the climax of this story, Hamir, the man who Phulan is supposed to get married to dies, and then Phulan takes Shabanu's wife, and then Shabanu is sold to a 55 year old rapist. In the ending of the book Phulan get married happily, and Shabanu runs away to go live with her aunt, because she doesn't want to become a sex slave. But then, her camel breaks a leg, and her dad finds her, and beats her. Also, I think the main idea of this book is, child marriage, and life of desert families in pakistan. I actually really liked this book. I thought it was good, because it was kind of sad and depressing, and i tend to like those books, also it always made me want to read more, because it was so interesting. This book wasn't very hard to read, it was a bit confusing at times, but not too much. There was some foreign language in the book, but in the back there were definitions, so that was really helpful. This book was very sup rising, and i never could guess what could happened next. The ending was really sad, but it left me wanting to read more. My favorite part was probably when Shabanu got along with her dad, and before he got really mean, and they were at the fair, and they played games, and were very happy. I guess I can relate to Shabanu because, usually I am really excited for something, and then plans change, and then its really unfair. I would really recommend this book to someone who likes sad/depressing books, but yet very interesting and sup rising, with a lot of action. I would probably give this book and 8 out of ten, because it wasn't my favorite book, but i definitely really enjoyed it, because of all the action and surprises. i didn't really dislike that much, although the beginning is a bit slow and boring, but it speeds up really quick, and becomes really good in a blink of an eye.

This book was about Fadi and his family who live in Kabul, Afghanistan at the time when the Taliban were trying to take over. They try to escape Afghanistan on a truck and in the middle of it Mariam the youngest falls of the truck and gets left behind. Fadi's little sister is lost in Afghanistan when Fadi and the rest of his families trying to do as much as they can to find her while moving to a new place in California.
I really liked this book, because there was a lot suspense on what will happen to Mariam or is Mariam safe. I also liked reading about Fadi and his family and how they got through that really hard time. I really liked the ending, because it didn't just tell you what happened you had to think about what the author told you.
I recommend this book to everybody who like suspense and reading about hard times in peoples lives. I rate this book 8.5 out of 10, because I really liked it but some parts were predictable. For example of course they are going to find Mariam in the end it is predictable.

Parvana' mother worries about Parvana and if she get caught Parvana's family can only hope for the best for pavana and her father.

I liked this book because it show point of view of how woman in Afghanistan feel. I thought the book was very exciting and sad. My favorite part is when Parvana's father finally returns. The ending to me was a little confusing but overall it was really good.
i would recommend this book to people who want to learned about woman of life in afghanistan. for rating i would give this book a 9.5, beacause

Imagine a cold, dark night. The air is chili and dry and all of your family is stiff, wishing they weren’t in this situation. You are trying to escape from Kabul, Afghanistan and make your way to California because of the strict Taliban, taunting you, your every step. Seems harsh huh? Well, this is what Fadi and his family is going through, but with an unexpected catastrophe… While trying to escape on the escape truck, Mariam, (Fadi’s younger sister and who he is suppose to be in charge of that night,) drops her Barbie. Because of her love for the doll, she tries to go after her. Fadi, unaware, drops Mariam and the truck drives away. Mariam is now all alone in Afghanistan because her family’s only choice is to go on to California. In California, Fadi feels as much guilt as a person can live with, and all of his family can get as much information as they can get about Mariam. Also, Fadi enters a photography competition hoping to win the grand prize of two tickets to India, so he can go and find Mariam. Even though Fadi does not win, Mariam is found! While at the display of the winning photos from the competition, Fadi looks at one of the pictures a judge took. He can’t believe his eyes because Mariam is in it! With this photo, Mariam is tracked down then sent to her family in California. The whole family reunites and all are happy!
I really surprised myself by liking this book. I didn’t think I would enjoy Shooting Kabul because I’m not really interested in the Middle East. I especially liked the part where Fadi and some of his friends who are also targets of Ike and Felix, threaten Ike and Felix because they were fed up with getting bullied then throw them into the lake. This book was kind of confusing in the beginning because of all the flashbacks, but towards the end it became clearer. Another thing I liked about this book was that it was the right level of reading for me. It was sometimes challenging, but it wasn’t too hard or too easy to read. The ending of the book was a little predictable. I knew Mariam was going to be found because if she wasn’t, the book would probably end sad and just bad in general, but I did like the ending. Mariam being lost reminds me of the tie I was lost…in the ocean. I was literally washed away by the wave and carried into the ocean and I felt like I was so far away from my family just like Mariam. (Even though I actually was only a couple yards into the water.)
I would definitely recommend this book to another student because it is very entertaining and it’s interesting to hear what Fadi does to try to find Mariam. I would rate this book a 7 out of 10 because although it was entertaining, at times it felt kind of slow, like when Fadi and his family were arriving in California.

Summary: In this book, the main character, Karim, fights with his brother and some friends to survive. Even though it is hard, Karim will not give up his life and dream. He has been shot twice, and his brother has been shot once, but hurt more than that. Then, he finds out about this big empty lot, perfect for a soccer field. So he will use this as an advantage, to fulfill his dream of becoming a famous soccer player.
Opinion: To me, this book is really boring. It seems as if even the action parts, are not full of action. For example, Karim got shot twice, but it was not exciting. I also do not like this book because it is written in 3rd person, which do not like.
Recommendation: Overall, I would not recommend this book to other people because I know that I am not the only person that dislikes this book, because the other people in my group do not like it. From 1-10, I would rate this book a 3 because I just really did not enjoy this book. it had no excitement and nothing to think about. They never killed off Jamal which was the only thing I could predict. You also couldn't evan make any inferences, not only because there were no clues of "Show not tell" cases. But even if you did have information, it would tell you the things anyway. If you got clues that maybe you thought "Jamal is a troublemaker," well then in the next paragraph it would probably say, "Jamal is a troublemaker." So I do not recommend this book to anyone who wants a book that will get their brains working.

Shabanu takes place in the Cholistan desert in Pakistan over around two years. The main character is an eleven year old girl named Shabanu. She lives with her sister, Phulan, and her mother, father, grandfather, aunt and cousins. Shabanu is a lucky girl. She has more freedom then most other Pakistani women. When Phulan's fiance dies, everything switches. Phulan marries Shabanu's fiance and Shabanu marries a fifty-five year old man named Rahim. Rahim will make Shabanu his sex slave. More and more terrible things happens. Bravery and courage are shown throughout the book.

At the beginning of Shabanu, it is very slow and a bit boring. But if you stick with it, Shabanu gets very interesting. It was confusing during the fight scene with the camels. I thought this book was believable because all of the events were reasonable. At times, the book was hard because they had lots of foreign words. Fortunately, in the back of Shabanu they have a glossary!

I would recommend Shabanu to mature middle schoolers because there are some inappropriate parts. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give Shabanu a 7 because of the slow beginning. Especially, I did not like, as I mentioned before, the camel fighting scene because it was very confusing.

This book was touching and heart breaking that was because women are treated as if they are animals in the Middle East. The Taliban is a militia group that treats those women as animals. The rules are that the Taliban enforces us that they can't leave the house unless they are by their husband or a male. This book is mainly about a 11 year old girl named Parvana that tries to support her family but, unfortunately her dad had gotten his leg blown off by a bomb and after that incident he wound up in jail. Since her dad is in jail and no one else can tend to the family, parvana has to be brave and sell goods under her own risk. Since the Taliban don't like girls unattended parvana has to be disguised as a boy to sell goods to provide money. If the Taliban catches parvana being disguised as a boy then she would get shot! There was a mysterious woman that was giving gifts to pervana out of a window. Parvana was curious to see who it was. So later that night parvana had gone into the mysterious house and discovered a secret...
I would recommend this book to anybody that likes sad but inspirational books about people living during a hard time but tries to get by. This book was not that difficult to read and I gave these three stars because I didn’t really like the topic. My opinion on this book is an action packed book but also very sad. That is because woman have no rights and allot of those people are living in a poverty. The only way to get by is to sell their own goods that haven’t been blown up by bombs.

Shabanu is a book about a girl named Shabanu who lives in the Cholistan dessert. Life isn’t always easy for her. Shabanu is Muslim and in their culture lots of people get married at a really young age. Her sister Phulan is Going to get married really soon. But when a tragic death occurs, Will Shabanu have to give up her happy Marriage to help her sister? Shabanu has to get married to a man who is 40 years older than her. It’s not her decision. Just as you think it is not going to get any worse, Phulan and Shabanu encounter and strange and horrible visit with the landlord Nazir-Muhamid, this encounter could scar them for life. To not have to face this horrible fate, Shabanu runs away to go live with her her aunt and uncle, Sharma and Fatima. But Shabanu just has to except her fate and learn to live with it.
I didn’t really enjoy this book that much. Even though the book was very well thought out and descriptive, the story line was flat. It wasn’t really about just one thing and it was kind of confusing. The book was descriptive about parts that didn’t need to be, the little details, but the most important part, the conflict, was not explained in depth and was kind of confusing. The book didn’t really have one conflict it had multiple. The books ending wasn’t the best ending out there. I didn’t like the ending it was to boring and the book just suddenly came to a halt and just ended like that, out of nowhere. This was definitely not my favorite book.
I would recommend this book to people who like learning about Muslim culture. This book talks a lot of their culture. I also recommend this book to book groups because there are lots of things to discuss. I would recommend this book to ages 11+ because there is some suggestive dialogue and the book has some parts that would not be appropriate for 10 year olds and younger. That’s why I would recommend ages 11+. If u gave this book a star review then I would give it 2 stars, because even though I didn’t like the story line, the author used really good language to describe things and did a great gob putting in detail and imagery.
