The book "A Little Piece of Ground" takes place in present day Palestine. Currently Palestine is at war with Israel over territory. Israel has terrorized and enforced curfews on Palestine. The main character Karim lives in Palestine with his parents, brother, and two sisters. One day Karim meets a mysterious boy that goes to his school who calls himself Hopper. Hopper takes Karim to an empty plot of land by his home and the refugee camp. Their plan is to rebuild this place so they can play soccer on it. They begin to rebuild it. Karim goes with his family to visit his grandparents house out of town. A unfortunate incident with a group of Israeli settlers enrages Karim and his hate for the Israelis grows stronger. He then returns. In a bomb hoax planned by Hopper, Karim, his best friend Joni, and Hopper, bond and become a friendship of three. Together they rebuild the land that they now call "Hoppers Ground" and play soccer and hang out with each other there. When the three finally get other kids to play soccer with them, a curfew comes right in the middle of the game. The other boys escape, but Karim is forced to take refuge in a broken down car. For two days he is trapped with nothing but soda to drink, and stray cats to keep him company. On the third day he is mislead to believe the curfew has ended. As soon as he steps out of the car he is shot in the leg. Stumbling to a safe place he gives up. His brother Jamal finds him and takes him to the hospital. He returns home after the curfew is up. He and his brother are treated like heroes and all is well again.
I thought that “A Little Piece of Ground” was a good book that really shows what it is like in that area in such a war-heated time. I believe that the development of each character was strong and the characters themselves are believable. The story contained the right mixture of humor and action. I can’t recall ever reading a particularly boring chapter. The ending was very climactic and happy and I wished that their was more to read.
I would recommend this book to any ages over the age of ten. Younger children would not understand some of the deeper themes of the book and the overall setting is intense.

This is book is about a girl named parvenu who has lived most of her life under Taliban rule, with almost no rights. She lives with mother, father, older sister, and her two younger siblings. depute the hardships, they make off okay. but that changes when the Taliban burst through the door and kidnap her father for having a foreign education. With no mean in the house, they have no way to get food. so they decide that in order to get food, one of them must become a boy. thats parvenu. she cuts her hair and wears her dead older brothers clothes. as the story goes on, providing for her family becomes harder and riskier, eventually she finds out her sister is getting married and moving away. She thinks where she is moving is safe from the taliban, but discovering a local of mazar who has fled to kabul proves different. she decides to go to the refugee camps near Mazar to try and save her family. Thats where the story ends, leaving you wondering what happens next. i liked it i guess, it wasn't to confusing or hard, i just thought the ending was really inconclusive. my favorite part was when her father returned because i thought that lifted the mood a bit. i would recommend this to people who wanna learn what its like to live under the taliban. i would give it a 7.

Words in the Dust is about a girl that has cleft lip and she get's bullied by people around her and even by her family. Her sister gets married to a man twice her age. This all takes place in Afghanistan. Zuliakha (the main character) get's the best news that the Americans can fix her cleft lip. After the surgery was done her family stop picking on her. Sadly right after the Surgery her family get's some bad news that Zuliakha's sister died because her husband burned her alive. I really liked this book because sometimes when ever I'm sad i like to read books that are kinda more sad than i am.
The book was a little confusing but not completely. The book was a little easy the only hard thing was the Middle Eastern words. I loved this book because it was interesting to see how people lives are than mine is. My favorite part of the book was when Zuliakha found out that beauty is only skin deep. That part was kind of like a connection because beauty really is only skin deep. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes to read really sad books. On a scale from 1-10, I would give this a 8.5 because the book had some interesting parts of the book that you normally wouldn't find in other books like, her mother got killed because she read books to her children even though its a big NO NO!!!!!!!!!
