“Pretty good book about this young boy who watched his older brother get gunned down in the streets. The only thing he remembers about that night are the tail lights of the car. Soon after, his home gets ransacked like somebody was looking for something. A coincidence???”

“Summary: Tish is a high school student who is smarter than her grades show. She doesn't really care about school, but she does keep a journal for her teacher Mrs. Dunphrey. But Mrs. Dunphrey never reads it. Tish wants all her entries secret because she is hiding what is happening at home. ...”

“Summary: Tish is a high school student who is smarter than her grades show. She doesn't really care about school, but she does keep a journal for her teacher Mrs. Dunphrey. But Mrs. Dunphrey never reads it. Tish wants all her entries secret because she is hiding what is happening at home. Her mom has quit going to work and lays around crying all day because Tish's dad has come back into the home after being gone for years and then leaves again. Mom can't seem to let him go, so she abandons Tish and her little brother Matt to follow the dad all the way to California. At first things are okay, but as the money runs out, the electricity gets turned off, and Tish must steal food from the store in order to feed her brother, she begins to feel desperate. Eventually she has to make a decision about her situation.

Man vs self conflict: Tish really feels guilty for stealing the hamburger meat from the grocery store.
Man vs. man conflict: Bud fires Tish from Burger Boy because she refused to date him.

Theme: People sometimes need to ask for help. I know this theme is true because in the book, Tish talks about how she should talk to one of her friend's parents but decides against it since her friends talk badly about them. She also asked for help when she called the electric company wanting to know what she could do to keep from getting the electricity cut off. The third example to prove the theme statement is Tish finally decided to talk to Mrs. Dunphrey about her situation at home because she realized she needed help.

I recommend this book for middle school or high school students because the character is that age group and she is interacting with people of that age. She is also dealing with friends who hurt her feelings and situations on the job what might happen to girls in high school.”
