“A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is not your typical page turner. Like much Joyce it is moving and musical but it appears to have no time, place and event centered plot as is popular these days. People refer to it as obliquely autobiographical but it seems to be more of an autobiography of Joyce’s consciousness during his youth, adolescence and young adulthood. In terms of style it is remarkable in a similar fashion to Ulysses but without the stream of consciousness. It has some other stylistic delicacies, however and is well worth the read. It truly is a remarkable document of a remarkable mind and a rather interesting consciousness. It was slow work getting through it as you will want to allow yourself plenty of time to savor its uniqueness. What an amazing and delightful piece of literature and it is not just for the scholarly type. Thinking people everywhere can find a piece of their lives here most certainly!”
