“ I found Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan to be a more simple plot structure when compared to other books I have read recently. Basically this is a boy meets girl high school drama, with the exception instead of boy meets girl, it is boy meets boy plot. When comparing this novel to a typical high school romance, this title is different because the setting is utopian. Paul and his friends live in town where, as Paul states, “There isn’t really a gay scene or strait scene in our town. They all got mixed up a while back…”. Paul never struggles with his homosexuality.
The main characters seem real at times, pretty typical, experiencing the typical teen angst in love and friendship. Our protagonist tries to make everyone happy. The friends do band together and support each other. The character, Darlene, and drag queen posse are a little different than most we would find, but who knows, Darlene may be plausible in such an accepting environment.
Leviathan’s idea to write the novel in first person allows us to become familiar with the thought process of our protagonist. We get a grasp of Paul’s internal emotions. Readers get a quirky look into our main character. One example of Paul’s thoughts, “….there’s always a split second when you turn and see that car coming, and you know that if you don’t continue moving, it will all be over. That’s how I feel a lot of the time. I know I’ll make it across. I always make it across. But the car is always there, and I always stop to watch it coming.” I love being able to be inside the characters thoughts.
All in all, the book was okay. I did not feel like it was a “must” read. I was kind of indifferent to the plot, as I did feel it lacked depth. (Also I should note, I am not a huge fan of Utopian style novels, so if you are...you may enjoy this novel.)”
