I teach math and science for future elementary and middle school teachers. I love my family and love my job. Most of all, I love my Lord who took my place on the cross.

Most of my students are reading a lot of books, and their enthusiasm for children's and adolescent literature is very contagious.

One of the best books I have read this year. The characters are written so well that you feel very close to them by the end of the book. This is a must-read, my friends!

    Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Im glad I finally read the book all the kids are reading. I can see where middle schoolers get a kick out the totally honest writings from a boy their age. The book was full of humor. It uses graphics like a comic to illustrate some of the stories thorughout the book. I can see the appeal for...

Still glad I read it though!

    Nightjohn

Nightjohn is a gripping tale of a young African American slave who risks it all to learn to read. The tale depicts the cruelty of slavery in the South. The story follows two characters who both thirst for knowledge. One unaware of the consequence, the other willing to take the risk. The story...

Nightjohn is a gripping tale of a young African American slave who risks it all to learn to read. The tale depicts the cruelty of slavery in the South. The story follows two characters who both thirst for knowledge. One unaware of the consequence, the other willing to take the risk. The story is full of themes that will carry your students through a discussion on slavery and the treatment of African Americans. The book is a little graphic and has some heavy content, but still appropriate for middle school.

    Granny Torrelli Makes Soup

This was a cute book about a girl and boy who are best friends. This book is different because it is told in short choppy stories. The characters narrate the book, but they talk like we think. This book explores the ups and downs of growing up and navigating friendship. It is a great read for...

Call It Courage by Sperry, Armstrong published by Perfection Learning (1990) [Hardcover]

This quick read was a great tale of a young boy becoming a man. Mafatu must overcome many hardships as he is thrust out into the wild to live by himself. This book reminded me a lot of Gary Paulsens books. The tale of a young boy surviving on his own will keep young readers reading to find out...

This quick read was a great tale of a young boy becoming a man. Mafatu must overcome many hardships as he is thrust out into the wild to live by himself. This book reminded me a lot of Gary Paulsens books. The tale of a young boy surviving on his own will keep young readers reading to find out what happens to Mafatu and his bog companion. This book had several overall themes that would be great for class discussions.

    Cut

This book takes a look at an issue that touches young adults. Bearing the weight of the adult world on her shoulders, a young girl turns to cutting herself. Step inside the mind of teen girls as they battle some of lifes toughest issues. This is a quick read; however, it's full of messages and...

    Jake, Reinvented

I didn't think this book was anything to write home to mom about. It is a spin-off of a classic, The Great Gatsby. I found the book to be lacking. I didn't think this book was anything to write home to mom about. It is a spin-off of a classic, The Great Gatsby. I found the book to be lacking. Its characters were pretty shallow, and the plot was very simple. I think the fact that Korman was trying to make a version of a classic means he gave up some creative ideas. If the plotted had been tinckered more, I think a good story could come from it; however, this book didn't leave me thinking much afterwards.
