“This is the story of a boy that was constantly beaten starved and emotionally abused by his mentally unstable, alcoholic mother. David Pelzer was living a normal happy life until everything drastically changed. “A Child Called It” a heart wrenching novel written by David Pelzer himself who endured 8 years of abuse in ways one cannot begin to imagine.
David lived with his mother, father and 4 brothers in Daly City, California. He was living a completely normal childhood until his mother suddenly spiraled out of control. Catherine Roevera was an alcoholic and unstable women who treated David Pelzer like a slave. She would torture him by, starvation, stabbing, burning and verbally abusing him. David was always in fear of his mother’s rage and wondering what she would do next but throughout all the pain and suffering he had hope. He was a very brave and courageous boy that endured so much but could not be defeated by his mentally disturbed mother; David’s will power saved his life.
The book “A Child Called It” would be recommended for teens because in this novel there is some inappropriate words that would not be suited for children younger than 12. This book is also recommended to readers that would enjoy an adventure book with a disturbing twist. This biography is very well written with an inspiring message held within. It sends out that a person has the ability to leave their dark past behind and hope for a brighter future and that is exactly what David Pelzer did.
