“When I found out this book was a science fiction that was about clones, it interested me. This book was the best book I read this year. I gave the book five stars for various reasons. The plot overall was remarkable because it made me keep on reading the book. One main reason for this was that the events were unexpected! “His lungs filled with liquid. A terror of drowning swept over him, and he tried to crawl away from the trough. His fingers dug into the rotting fish-slimed soil.” (172) Some of the characters were unrealistic because they were extremely old! However, I liked they way the author described them. For example, Mr. MacGregor, El Patron’s fellow farmer, got organ transplants because he was getting old like El Patron. “He still looked–as Felicia put it–like something the Grim Reaper forgot to collect.” (126) There was one thing that I didn’t like about this book. In the beginning, there were two chapters that were only about El Patron’s birthday party. I thought there was too much unnecessary information. Some things that Matt said were obvious, and also repetitive. “‘What if he’s…weird?’ said Matt. He remembered answering the question ‘Am I dead yet?’ over and over the last time the old man visited.” (93) One interesting thing about this book that it never said anything about the time of the story took place. At first I guessed that it took place in mid-1900s. But throughout the book, I couldn’t find any clues about the time. My favorite character in this book was Matt. He had characteristics that no other character did. Even though he was a clone, he was able to express his thoughts “Matt suddenly snapped. ‘I’m not a good boy!’ he screamed. ‘I’m a bad clone! And I hate counting and I hate you!’ He grabbed Teacher’s carefully arranged apples and hurled them every which way.” (73) You must read this book if you’re a true fan of sci-fi books! But, I also recommend this book to teenagers who like to read different genres of books. It’s okay even if the reader doesn’t like science fiction, because the story is mostly an adventure of Matt.”
