A world war two setting and the exploits of a German spy operating in Great Brittan. Ken Follett is a master story teller.

How does one review 970 pages? Enough to say that this is a compelling novel - a story of scoundrels and peasants with twists and turns as their lives are interwoven over several decades in the 1300's in England. Murders, love affairs, the plague - this novel has it all and don't expect to be able to put it down for long - it'll draw you back like a magnet - page after page after page. A masterpiece.

Not as fast paced as other Connelly novels. A little tedious by times - I find myself thinking... OK... don't care...let's get on with it. From about the 3/4 point the pace quickened and kept me at it.

Typical Connelly - hard to put down. Suspense until the end. I was impressed with his knowledge of and/or his research into the writings of Poe and how he intertwined exerts into this novel. Top marks to Michael Connelly.... again.

If there was a fourth category between "I'm reading it now" and "I've read it" that's the one I would have checked off. Because I gave up on it. Dull boring uninteresting waste of time.

The Murders in the Rue Morgue

I read this novel more out of curiosity than anything else. And I found it pretty dull. After a few of the clues were disclosed it became pretty obvious who or what the culprit would be so it was no surprise ending. The terminology and sentence structure that Poe uses is interesting and I certainly learned a few new words which I'll probably never use. Would I recommend it? No... not unless you're just curious what is said to be the first murder mystery reads like.

So far I am NOT finding this read at all interesting. I'm struggling to stay with it. Maybe I'm not sophisticated enough to appreciate the mundane lifestyle and repetitive daily events of an African tribe. I’ll keep it going for now and read some pages interspersed with more interesting and compelling other novels.

After a second attempt complete this novel I'm giving up. It just doesn't work for me. I fail to understand the positive reviews. Bland and tedious.

The Masque of the Red Death

As my first Poe novel I found it a somewhat difficult read. The vocabulary and terminology of the day was a challenge for me. The dictionary function on my e-reader was put to good use. Overall an interesting reading experience and I plan to read some more of Poe's works.
