I understand where you are coming from in the appropriateness in me reading it, but that is actually why are reading some of these books (with parent permission). We are doing a unit where we read and talk about books that have been banned or were challenged at one time in history and even sometimes today. We are talking about censorship and what, and how, we believe it should be used, if ever. Here is a list of the books I get to choose from..1. Beloved, Toni Morrison2. Black Like Me, John Howard Griffin3. Catch-22, Joseph Heller4.The Chocolate War, Robert Cormier5. Clan of the Cave Bear, Jean Auel6.The Color Purple, Alice Walker7. A farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway8.Flowers for Algernon, Daniel Keyes9.The Giver, Lois Lowry10. Gone With the Wind, Margaret Mitchell11.The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck12. The Handmaids Tale, Margaret Atwood13.I know why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou14. In Cold Blood, Truman Capote15. Native Son, Richard Wright16.One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ken Kesey17.The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne18. Slaughterhouse Five, Kurt Vonnegut19.Uncle Tom's Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe
