Dear Ms. Novogratz, I'm almost finished w/ 'Sweater and wanted tell you how much I appreciate what you've done and are doing. Having lived in Asia for 30+ years teaching the kids of US military, I can relate (in a very modest way) to some of the situations you described--17 yrs in the Philippines, as well as taking a grad degree from a University in Manila helped me to understand le grand indifference that the "haves" demonstrate to the "have nots". In a related matter, my late sister, was for many years director of public responsibility at American Express in NY. Among other areas, she was responsible for AmEx's philanthropic/corporate giving. As such, in several of her speeches, she described herself as a "missionary on a tightrope". My guess is you can somehow relate to that. 'Enjoyed looking over your "shelf"; I, too, enjoyed Mr. Obama's "Dreams..." and Gladwell's "Outliers". Again, thank you for all you efforts; keep up the good work.

I have really enjoyed your book. I have always felt that most charitable organizations and the actions they take go a long way toward alleviating immediate suffering, but do almost nothing to solve the problem--so we all just keep giving. People want to do things for themselves and feel pride in being self sufficient. If they are unable to do that it's usually because the system they live under frustrates their efforts, or worse the system has beaten them down to the point where there is no hope. To improve opportunities the system must be changed--that, of course, is the hard part.
