  • The Kite Runner
    • Rated 4 stars

Amir, born into a wealthy family in Kabul, and Hassan, his servant, are boyhood friends. Hassan is "a thousand times over" Amir's faithful servant and friend. Amir, however betrays him in such a way that haunts him almost all of his life, until one day, he is given the chance to redeem himself. The story is very well written and delves into the hearts and souls of the characters and also gives a fictional, yet historical account of what was happening in Afghanastan during that time period. I would highly recommend this book. This book sheds light on the atrocities of war and the strengths and weaknesses of man when face to face with good and evil. My heart breaks for all who are living in these war torn countries.

  • The Story of Edgar Sawtelle
    • Rated 3 stars

I loved the way the author, developed the characters, their lives and the flow of the whole story, until the end-it really gave the book a hole different flavor. In a million years, I would not have thought of such a shocking ending. Maybe this is what people like about the story. I did not. Except for the ending, the book was wonderful, so how do I rate it? Very difficult. I would have given it five stars before the ending.

  • Charlie the Ranch Dog
    • Rated 4 stars

Told from the perspective of Charlie, the ranch dog, Charlie brags about bringing, er helping to bring the big tree into the house. He soon decides he has worked hard enough to take a nap. He has a strange dream: he dreams there is a rabbit in the house! Rabbits don't belong in the house! Suddenly he realizes it is not a rabbit, it is a kitty! Charlie does not like this one bit. He gets a bit forlorn, stating "I really wasn't expecting this development." Thinking if he goes back to sleep, he will find out it is all a dream. When he awakens, the kitty is gone. "My soul rejoices." The kitty is outside. Charlie tries to ignore it, mind his own business and even take another nap, hoping it will go away. He tries to scare it. No luck. Kitty stays. Kitty jumps on his back and it's little paws feel good on Charlie. Just as Charlie decides the kitty can stay, in walks someone holding a new puppy! Adorable book about accepting new things, and making new friends. I loved it.

  • The Hueys: The New Sweater
    • Rated 4 stars

The Hueys all look alike and think alike and do the same things (as well as have the same name.) Imagine the shock when one of them decides to be different and knits himself a bright orange sweater!
At first everyone is shocked, until one of the other Huey's decides to knit himself the same exact sweater. Soon, all of the other Huey's have knit themselves the exact same sweater. Now, of course, they all look the same again, until one of them decides to start wearing a hat. The last page shows them wearing different hats. This book shows it is okay to be different in a very cute way. I loved the little Hueys. I think the children would like this also.

  • The Three Bears' Christmas
    • Rated 3 stars

Very cute twist on the Three Bear's story. While Mama, Papa and Baby Bear are out for a walk, someone has been nibbling on their gingerbread, but ate Baby Bear's all up. Someone sat in Mama and Papa's chair, but someone broke Baby Bear's chair. And so it goes, all along, someone leaves a red fuzzy hat, red fur trimmed boots and a furry red coat. Then they hear "Jingle, jingle, jingle" and run downstairs and find someone has left presents under the tree and filled their stockings. They hear "Ho, ho, ho!" and run outside and see Santa leaving on his sleigh with the reindeers. Any child would love this sweet book.

  • The Christmas Magic
    • Rated 4 stars

This book gently tells the story of Santa gathering his reindeer, feeding them parsnips and berries and polishing their bells on his sled. He polishes his boots and trims his moustache. He goes to the room at the top of the house where he keeps a book with the names of all children written in it. With great care he chooses toys for every child in the world. Santa loves each child and knows what each one wishes for most. Once his bag is full, he puts it on his sleigh. The reindeer paw at the snow, knowing the magic time is near. Magic makes the reindeer fly, the stars light the way and Santa's sleigh travels around the world to each child's house on Christmas Eve. Magical book about the story of Christmas. Beautiful illustrations

  • Dear Santa Claus
    • Rated 4 stars

It is time for Holly and Billy to write to Santa Claus. Holly has many questions she wants to ask Santa, so she writes him and asks about his elves and how his reindeer fly, how many elves there are and what they do all day. Each time Holly wrote, Santa answered - 5 times. Holly was afraid to ask for what she really wanted, but finally, time was running out so she wrote her final letter to Santa and went to bed Christmas Eve. That night she had a dream that Santa gave her a ticket and let her ride in his sleigh while he delivered presents to the boys and girls on Christmas Eve all around the world. The next morning, she wondered if it had all been a dream, until she found the ticket inside an envelpe at the bottom of her bed. All of Santa's letters were supposed to be tucked inside little envelopes attached to the pages, but all of them were missing. I loved the story, but could not read Santa's answers to Holly, so a little bit of the magic was lost to me. I will try to find a copy with the letters still inside.

  • The Finest Christmas Tree
    • Rated 5 stars

Farmer Tuttle had a Christmas tree farm. Every year he filled his truck with trees and brought them into town to sell. Every year he used the money to buy Mrs. Tuttle a new hat. One year, people stopped buying his real Christmas trees. They wanted plastic trees. Farmer Tuttle took his trees home. He did not have money to buy Mrs. Tuttle a new hat. The next year, a man from the sawmill offered to buy all the trees in the forest. He was going to make toothpicks and clothespins out of them. They had until Christmas to decide. The day before Christmas, Farmer Tuttle go a letter saying that the workers at a factory wished to have the finest tree in the forest for their Christmas party. A crew of cutters would arrive shortly. Farmer Tuttle was very excited, but the crew of cutters did not come. Farmer Tuttle went to the forest and saw tiny footprints in the snow. He heard the chop chop of an axe and saw a tree fall down. Tiny figures rushed to the tree and lifted it to their shoulders. They put the tree on the back of their sleigh. He heard little voices cheer as the sleigh raced over the snow. The sleigh rose up and flew through the silent, glimmering stars. Where the tree had stood was a box with a beautiful Christmas hat inside. Farmer Tuttle's trees still grow in the forest. Every year the crew of cutters come for the finest tree in the forest. Every year the leave a hat for Mrs. Tuttle. Very sweet, special story to read at Christmastime.

  • Who Pushed Humpty Dumpty?
    • Rated 5 stars

Who pushed Humpty Dumpty? What really happened to the old witch?
What happened to Snow White? All of the clasic fairy tales are solved by a clever frog detective. I loved it. Probably for a little older group. 5-6 and up.
