I like books that take me to a new place and share an intimate world. Some authors show me that they are aware of parts of my life and others expose me to experiences I never knew. The more I read, the greater my appreciation of the art of writing. I look forward to sharing ideas with other of the Shelfari community.

    Hello Hal,

I noticed or remembered that you are a member of the Paul Auster discussion/reading group. Coincidentally, the author Paul Auster is included in a Suggested reading list in my current read 'Things I've Been Silent About" authored by Azar Nafisi It seems we do have a true reading connection Hal-even if it does become a bit convoluted at times.

    Hal,
Since I wrote about the nest and birds I went and looked up under the carport today and believe it or not the bird had rebuilt it's nest and was sitting pretty! The earlier nest somehow or other blew to the ground(it was storming) without the baby birds and was destroyed. I'll have to think of this bird sitting pretty in it's brand new nest whenever I am tempted to give up. Nature is inspirational.

    Hi Hal,
A angry goose might be difficult to fend off-good choice. I've heard through the grapevine that geese have been used in place of watchdogs. I live in a townhome, so luckily we have gardeners who take care of the landscaping. Although I live on the edge of a suburb there is quite a bit of wildlife. Coyotes have been known to be up front and personal at my living room window, lizards, opposums, skunks, hummingbirds, hawks, owls, rats, mice, black widow spiders, rabbits, deer ect. That is kind that you to put off yardwork until their nesting is completed. The bird I mentioned earlier that comes every year to build a nest-well it is very sad since 9 times out of ten the baby birds are murdered. This year a delivery truck slammed into the fire estinguisher which is located on the back of my carport. The container for the extinguisher was banged up badly-although the fire extinguisher was left intact. Above the extinguisher is a carport light-which is where the bird builds it's nest every year. I guess when the truck hit the extinguisher it was hard enough to reverberate through the carport structure and knocked the baby birds out of their nest. My neighbor noticed and told me about it. Another yr. some neighborhood kids dragged the trash container underneath the carport climbed on top of it and ended up killing the baby birds. One yr. my dog in our yard accidentally killed a newly flying baby bird. The bird parents were hysterical and flew around and around searching for their baby chirping distress calls for hours. The gardeners have killed baby hummingbirds by clipping the nest with eggs right out of the tree under our window. I hope next year the little bird and it's birdlings will be
    able to survive.

Yes I agree Hal. There is a birds nest hidden under the eaves of my carport at this very moment-as my bird friends come back every year to build their nest and hatch their eggs in this particular place-no fail-they are my personalized version of the clockwork of nature.I can certainly understand the musings of the inventor of the cuckoo clock.

    Hi Hal,
I wonder if there has ever been a case where an innocent person who resembles an infamous child murderess is maimed or killed? This is what I was thinking during the Susan Smith trail- just the type of non probable incident that could occur in my life. I was on high alert during the Susan Smith case-(even though there is only a slight resemblance noticed with certain camera angles)Have you ever noticed those life size cardboard cut outs-(the type they sometimes use to advertise actors character roles in the movie theater) esp.the ones of people who resemble a person's favorite politician, movie star or famous persona? I suppose these people cut outs are placed in businesses to work on a person's implicit memory and unconsciously gain a customer's trust. For quite awhile after the Smith case I was uptight about people's implicit memories being triggered which I imagined could perhaps lead to the abrupt ending of my explicit life or at the very least- being treated rudely in public venues for no "apparent" reason.Really, if you think I am being silly-one day the local Sheriff came waltzing through my door unannounced when I had a handyman repairing various things in my home. I had previously received a letter informing me of zoning laws which said I had the right to only so many chickens and goats on my property- I did not own such a property-so I ignored the letter and did not reply promptly.Turns out the woman who did own said property was missing under suspicious circumstances and the police feared she was a murder victim-this is why the Sheriff did what he did. I was not too discombobulated at the time, as it occurred to me my hired handyman could be the reason for the Sheriff's visiting interest-since he followed Mr. Handy directly into my home. I have a 100 lb Dalmatian dog who could easily eat a man for breakfast-luckily he liked the Sheriff right away so I was pretty sure the Sheriff was not up to no good.(esp. comforting to know if the waltzer is armed) Eventually the identity mix up was straightened out and my dog and I made two new friends.

    DRACULA: Hearts of Stone.
Enter this world of magical vampires. It’s a place where enchantment and biters interweave for an exciting adventure.
It’s a tale of magic, romance and fangs; a tale of valor.
We start with a shiny new pot of boiling water and add too many evil vampires, and not enough of the good biters. Toss in one suicidal Dracula; add a cup of mayhem and a dash of romance. Oh yes, and a pinch of mirth. Stir lovingly and you have a new novel by A. J. Gallant. If it sounds like the recipe for you then you must read Dracula: Hearts of Stone.

    OR

"Madman in the Mirror" is a story about a man - Henry Johnson - who is raised by a psychopath and forced to watch - even as a baby - his father murder people on a regular basis. He is also abused and brainwashed, turning him into a sociopath. Henry stalks and murders people efficiently - he tells himself that he may be a killer, but he doesn't want people to suffer. He is haunted by hallucinations, including a specter in his mirror that talks to him.
“A.J. is a master at creating word images that remain with the reader long after the book is finished.” Richard S. Friedman

    O.K. Hal
I'll have to admit that what I wrote below is somewhat of an exaggeration-like Roths heavy jaw. At certain camera angles perhaps there is a quick corner of the eye doppelganger effect.

    Hi Hal,
Yes, you are correct in that Roth has somewhat stronger features, however there is a resemblance. I look like an infamous person-the child murderess-Susan Smith-although I wear contact lenses. No one has ever remarked upon this physical similarity-

O.K. Hal I have to tell you something...Do you remember Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords? When she was shot and I saw her photo on T.V. I said to my daughter Wow! she looks like she could be a relative to the movie star Gywneth Paltrow and it turned out she was related to Paltrow-cousins in fact. Well to get to the point- I've thought the same about you and Philip Roth.:)

    Hi Again Hal,
On second though some of Roth's writing has brought forth a few feelings in me that might not be the nicest -regarding his attitude towards women, however by books end I have been able to come to a resolution that is satisfying in and of itself.
