I like books that take me to a new place and share an intimate world. Some authors show me that they are aware of parts of my life and others expose me to experiences I never knew. The more I read, the greater my appreciation of the art of writing. I look forward to sharing ideas with other of the Shelfari community.

    Hey Hal,
Yes I read "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat" I bought the book at a used bookstore inside a public library for 50 cents. I happened to be trying to help my mom that day-she lost her sight a couple yrs. ago.due to a combination of macular degeneration and falls-she still has some peripheral vision left-for the time being. So yes Dr. Sacks books are relevant to me in a real way-my mom has a bit of aphasia also-music and singing improve esp. her mood/anger and frustration level and verbal memory dramatically.I figured this fact out before I read the book, however reading it later-helped me to realize what I had been doing-every time I sneakily slipped a C.D. into the player. I tried earplugs at one pt. I was so desperate-don't laugh-earplugs were useless but music worked like a charm-my prayers were answered.Has to be Roy Orbison/Nat King Cole or oldies. Pretty much all of Sacks books have something or other to offer me -on a personal basis. I am totally into Oliver Sacks books-never dry or boring.Luria is also esp. good -have to agree with Sacks.I'm just grateful my mom isn't into heavy metal or rap-:)

    Hi Hal,
No-but I plan to. I love music.I also have to read The Mind's Eye, Seeing Voices.I had a professor of philosophy who had to take statistics three times before she was able to pass the class-and I believe her husband who was a mathematics prof. helped her. If you find statistics easy-you can make quite a bit of money tutoring-as the majority of people are at a loss trying to understand statistics. I'll have to look into it one of these days-for curiosities sake.

    Hi Again Hal,
I did not write a review-just checked your review as helpful and wrote my usual rambling reply to your review. My daughter has a minor in sociology. How did you get through the statistics-I've heard through the grapevine that they are murder.

I'll be happy to share thoughts with you. I hope you enjoy "Unbroken." I loved it. If it were fiction it would completely absurd because you wouldn't believe someone could survive such a prolonged ordeal. The title is perfect.

    Hi Hal,
Yes I did enjoy the book"Letting Go" I agree about Roth's insight-and who can not use a bit more insight? Personally I love the stuff and can easily read until epiphany.
