You know the biggest drag of this site is that you can't see what the other person wrote while you are replying.

I did read Little Criminals.. but for the life of me I can't remember it. There are some books with me that are like that- fast reads that are good but don't stick with me long. Like Chinese food. I gave Art to Choke Hearts only three because Black Coffee Blues is SOOO much better. Although now that I think of it I should change it because he should get an extra star just for being Henry Fuckin Rollins.

Nope, turns out that he didn't have swine flu- just a whiner!

Let me know how you like the pigeon. I almost bought the only other Suskind book at the bookstore - I think it's called Mr. Summer's Winter- it's illustrated and said both adults and kids will love it. I'm sure its great. I had never seen it before, but I just couldn't justify dropping 16 bucks on a book that would take me less than an hour to read. As far as I know, he only has the three.

Did I tell you that Shiloh got me a first edition of The Road for mother's day? Awesome. I also picked up a first edition of No County and The Crossing. Stashing those bad boys away. Are you gonna see The Road? I've seen some trailers...hummmm not so sure. You should see No Country- they really did it up right! Loved it and I was also dicey on that one. Chigurth (sp?) was such a bad mother, just as he should have been. They did change the end tho. (so I went to send this and they told me I had to clean up my filthy mouth! - I had originally written bad-as*. Apparently Fuckin is A-OK though!)

Speaking of books to movies, have you seen Where the Wild Things Are yet?

    Hey ho-
So, do you still celebrate turkey day since you're in Canada, eh? Why are holidays so awkward to tell your children about? Well, honey before whitey slaughtered all the Indians, we liked them 'cause they had the food and we were hungry. But once we were full... And that's just Thanksgiving! The Tooth Fairy? Oz thinks that the tooth fairy is named Herve and swoops like a condor rather than flutters. Can't wait till Christmas. A few years ago, after explaining who, exactly, this Jesus was and that he rose from the dead (a pretty cool trick by anyone's standards), Oz looked at me and said "like a zombie?" And I said, "Yes, honey. Like a zombie." I imagine she envisioned a Scooby-Doo zombie-jesus. Hell, she can pay for her own therapy later. Anyway, this Thanksgiving I was full of deviled eggs and pie- I think I still might be.

DOOOOOD- read you some Steinbeck if you have not. The man is good I tell ya. All the Pretty Horses for your book club- one of my favs! I keep thinking I will read it again, but so many books... I just picked up As I Lay Dying by Faulkner. Ever read him? All the modern authors that I love are always compared with him so I thought I'd go directly to the source. The back says- "the novel ranges in mood from dark comedy to the deepest pathos." mmmmmmmm dark comedy....mmmmmmmm deep pathos.

I am curious to see if your library even has The Pigeon. It isn't like Perfume. It is, however, really really good and a quick read.

That's where Shake Hands parts from Tomorrow we will be killed- Daillaire's account is a very political approach - i.e. LOTS of bureaucratic paperwork- and written by a military mind and Tomorrow is much more a horrified journalist's account and history of the on the ground atrocities i.e. really fuckin grizzly. I found Daillaire's much easier when about chapter 3 I made a cheat sheet with all the acronyms- so many.

I saw you added The Greatest White Trash Love Story Ever Told- I have to get that one. Great title. So romantic.

Hope Stephanie is ok. Is she big pimpin with gold teeth? I'm assuming that they are all still her baby teeth (?).

Speaking of big pimpin- I just finished reading East of Eden. Loved it- there is a character who Steinbeck calls a "whoremaster". Awesome. That's my fav new word.
    See ya ya whoremaster!

I can see not liking Murakami- even though I LOVE him... He's pretty out there.
I don't much like McCarthy's "Tennessee" works. A bit rambling and stream of consciousness for my taste. My big pet peeve is when a writer takes 3 pages to tell you about the scenery. That's why I love his Westerns so much because the scenery is woven into the action instead of description and then story. Blood Meridian got too bogged down for me.
I think "And Tomorrow" would be a fantastic choice for a book club. Certainly would give you lots to talk about and fits your bill of something "meaty". Another one I read that I though was great is called Random Family (non-fiction). Another good one is 100 Little Hitlers. And last but not least My Life In France by Julia Child. That's one that I would have never picked up on my own, but someone lent it to me and it was really really great. Oh wait, one more- Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain.

For you though, I just finished reading one called Blackwater: The rise of the world's most powerful mercenary army. SOOOOOO scary!!! Holy crap. The guy that owns/runs this private military literally goes against EVERY moral fiber in my being. (Shat-up, I actually do have a few!!!). Such an fascinating read, it will make your jaw drop.

That Romeo Dallaire book is so fuckin sad... really by the end, I just hated people (OK OK-I hated them before) I don't know if you have read anything about Rwanda , but I went through this spell where I read just about everything on both Rwanda and genocide because I was (and still am) facinated by the level and depths of humankind's cruelty as well as America's global failings. The Dallaire book is awesome- a very political discussion yet highly readable. He is a man plagued by demons. If you have read anything about Rwanda I would highly recommend it. But, if you have not read anything, I'd start with"And Tomorrow We Shall Be Killed By Our Families" By Phillip Gourievitch (sp?). Man oh man, good luck with that one.... Probably not for your faint of heart book club ladies. I think if you read that one first then the Romeo Dallaire will be a natural follow-up.

I just picked up Steinbeck's East of Eden. Never read any steinbeck and go far it's really great.

I thought Pretty Horses could stand on its own. Or, have you ever read any Haruki Murikami? This guy is really fantastic. His stuff would be great book club material. He's so weird twisted, and yet very light handed. My personal fav is The Wind Up Bird Chronicle, but it's really long. For book club check out either Kafka on the Shore or Hard Boiled Wonderland and The End of The World. Do you guys do non-fiction in your club?
