One of the perks of teaching school is an early retirement, and way more time to read. I lean toward historical fiction and thrillers, but read a wide variety of genres except for an unexplained aversion to fantasy and English authors. I wandered somehow onto this site and find it to be a little bit of heaven. I love the wealth of suggested... more »

You willprobably laugh, but my car still has a tape deck - so my audio books are mostly cassettes - though once in a while I try to listen to cds at home.

My husband bought me an Insignia about three years ago. I can download from audible in books and it pick up where it leaves off and not listed as music but anything else I download is listed as a music. I like my Insignia and haven't had anyrpoblems with it. If you don't switch to audio books during the playback of the music it stays where you were.

Honestly, I'm still using a CD player! Do you buy your audiobooks or use the library? If you use the library, find out what models the library's audio vendors say is compatible with their product. There are tons of models out there offered primarily by Sony, Samsung, and Sandisk, as well as the iPod and Zune. Good luck!

Hi Mary Ellen, (love your dog!)
I had a Creative Zen but had trouble scanning content back and forth (especially when I got "lost" and needed to back up just a bit - or when somehow, I managed to skip to the next section of the book). I replaced it with a Sony Walkman. I really like it alot. The only thing I don't like is that Sony doesn't charge using a regular USB. I had to buy a special charger for the car. It does come with a USB/Sony cable to charge using your computer - but it is hard to find a wall charger. As it turns out, it hasn't been a huge issue because the battery life is extremely long - I can listen for hours and hours without recharging. I can always get to my computer to recharge once a week or so. The Walkman is pretty cheap - I only got a 4 mg, and it is plenty big. I don't keep the books on it - I get them off of Overdrive from my library, and delete when I am through. I have, maybe 4-5 at a time, and I haven't begun to take up the memory space at all. Hope this helps.

Mary Ellen, have you listened to any Playaway digital audiobooks?
Libraries are starting to circulate them:
    http://playaway.com/about-playaway/
I listened to GONE WITH THE WIND on a playaway this summer.
    It was 50 hours long!

Hi Mary Ellen -- one good place to check MP3 player reviews is at Cnet.com and for audiobooks, if you can afford it, I'd recommend a player that allows you to place manual bookmarks (http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-players-with-bookmarking/). The next best thing is a player that will pick up where you leave off. I have a Microsoft Zune and really like it -- it keeps audiobooks and music separate, allowing me to switch back and forth between the two without losing my place in the book. It also recharges with a USB cord and my computer, which is convenient. The Creative Zen series is also good, but you can't switch between music and books, you'll lose your place every time. If, however, you're sticking with only books, this player, too, will pick up where you leave off. And, though I don't have personal experience, the world does love the iPod. I see that you live in Allegany and your library system has downloadable books through Overdrive (http://ccls.lib.overdrive.com/). There's a link on that page for supported audio devices which will also give you an idea. Good luck!

    Mary,
I listen to a lot of audiobooks, but all I ever do is play them on my cd player in the car. I know nothing about other types of players, however I have read where others say they like the iPod Touch because of how easy it is to rewind and such. But I do not know anything about them from my own experience.

I have a ZEN Micro (4 gig/bought in '05) and a ZEN Portable Media Player
    (8 gig/bought in '08). I also have an iPod Nano (third generation/8 gig/bought
in '07). I download from OverDrive (library system digital catalog), Barnes &
Noble MP3 audio downloads, and Audible (when I was a member). I have been
happy with the audiobook functions of all three devices. When the batteries
in these devices finally bite the dust, I think I will purchase an iPhone and
    another ZEN.

The easiest way is to decide where you will be downloading from and find their page for compatible players. For example, I use my Sansa (a model that is discontinued) only for audiobooks - no music - and I download from Overdrive and Netlibrary through my library. I also rip CD's and transfer to the Sansa from Windows Media Player. I chose Sansa because it was on the compatible list for both Overdrive and Netlibrary. I'm spoiled by my library; in all the years I've been listening I've never paid for an audiobook or download.
How many books do you want on the player at one time? Mine is 2 gig, I can put two average books on at a time. Drood, a 24 CD book, almost filled it.
Next - how important is bookmarking to you? Mine does resume after being turned off, but if I charge it, download, delete, or switch to another book my place is lost. If you want to keep your place through those functions, you'd want bookmarking, which increases the cost of the player.
Then you could get into all the options for playing it through your car's audio system, which depends mostly on the sound system in the car. My car's old, I plug a cassette adapter into the cassette player and the jack at the other end goes in the headphone plug of the MP3 player.
If you want to use an IPod or IPhone I could find answers to specific questions in an Audiobook group on - believe it or not! - a knitting site called Ravelry.
I hope this helps. If you have more questions, I can call my "geek squad" - 20 yr old daughter & her college friends, they have several different MP3s among the group.
Let me know how it goes!

Hi there! I'm just dropping by to welcome you to The 100+ Book Challenge. The idea of the group is pretty much self explanatory - try to read 100 or more books in a one year period. If you do have any questions, please feel free to send a message to me or Tenia. In the meantime, good luck reaching your goal!

Hi Mary Ellen. I just accepted your friend request. Thanks for asking. I noticed we also have several books in common and I'm also happily retired. I think I may have "seen" you over at Play Book Tag, too.

I know, I know...got a bit obsessive yesterday. :) I'm on vacation from work and that ridiculous, fevered episode on Shelfari got, well...ridiculous! I will have to check out the Kindle. I just love the feel and smell of a book--though I know trees died for my pleasure :(

Color me retired. I've always been a voracious reader but now that I'm not working, I am really in trouble! I just learned of this site through a friend and joined today and got in the groove of posting the books I've read. I keep a journal so it was relatively easy. Though I didn't post a lot of commentary. I may go back and do that. I'd love to discuss thrillers with you. I have lots I didn't post. I am a huge Harlan Coben fan and have read every one of his books. And a lot of the usual suspects in mysteries--Michael Connolly, James Patterson (though he's wearing thin), William Lashner, and more. Look forward to hearing your thoughts.
