One of the perks of teaching school is an early retirement, and way more time to read. I lean toward historical fiction and suspence, but read a wide variety of genres except for an unexplained aversion to fantasy and English authors. I wandered somehow onto this site and find it to be a little bit of heaven. I love the wealth of suggested... more »

Hi Mary Ellen, I have to say I really enjoyed Left Neglected. I am on a waiting list for The Night Circus so I will have to let you know how that one goes. I definitely need to step up my reading...got an IPad for my birthday and it has drastically reduced my reading. :(

I read Never Look Away by Barclay last week and it was 5 stars for me. Still Missing by Chevy Stevens is good but quite graphic. Angel Fire By Lisa Unger was pretty good and The Red Breast by Jo Nesbo. I am reading my 2nd book by Jeffrey Deaver and enjoying it, The Coffin Dancer. I have Unsaid on my TBR list so I will be interested to hear your thoughts.

Hi Mary Ellen, I see you read Linwood Barclay. He is one of my favorite mystery authors now. I read my first book last year. I used to love Patterson and Cornwell but their last few books were not good. I haven't read The Accident yet but it is on my TBR list. Hope you have a great day with some good reading.

Hi, yes it's me. I think Gracie is the dog you had or got when you were fighting your fight....isn't she? I just remember you talking about Gracie. Anyway, I am trying to break away from my "rut" too. I have read so many civil war novels I am getting depressed! That's why I was looking at other people's shelves.

I got Pillars for the Kindle so I wouldn't be intimated by a 900 page book. So far I only know that I'm 35% of the way through the book. So far so good!

I also put a very in-depth, and quite personal for me, response on PBT. I apologize for the length but it does explain my position well.

I agree that many physical and occupational therapists are extremely close to patients due to the intense nature of rehab, and that we often don't remember their names afterwards - perhaps even as a defense mechanism to block out stressful times in our lives. I just thought that Genova was starting to set up Heidi as more and didn't follow through.

The mother was perhaps the most realistic person to me. Mothers are often blessed with an inordinate supply of patience and love, regardless of their role in the past.

I wanted to post that on PBT but then got so off-track in my response that it seemed out of place to tack it onto the end! I did want to share it with you though so you know that I read your response :)

The whole time I was reading this book I kept thinking about how much I was reading this with a face-to-face book club. I adore PBT, don't get me wrong, but Left Neglected contained so much material for a wonderful discussion!

    Hi Mary Ellen~

I just finished Left Neglected by Lisa Genova and had a very different reaction from you. I saw your 5 star + heart review on PBT and definitely agree about the message of having your priorities straight when it comes to family and career - not that you can't do both but you need a healthy balance. I also think that Genova is a wonderful writer and I felt what Sarah felt.

However, I found Sarah's ability to cope with her diagnosis and rehab to lack the full range of emotions someone struck with a life-changing disability would have. I also found her mother and husband to be impossibly patient and supportive when, in reality, it is an extremely hard transition for family caregivers as well the injured.

I just wanted to share some of my reflections and hear what you thought of that portion of the story. I think this is a great book to discuss for any number of reasons, and hope to hear more of your thoughts! :)

I do have Lake Of Dreams and am hoping to get started before I need to return the library copy.
I know I'll eventually get there but the year so far has been hectic and all I've gotten to is audio as I'm on the move....and a tiny E book.
I'm hopeful things will even out soon.

This is the first time I have ever done the year read through. Just 4 days in and it is surprising to me how much in our minds traditional editorial is interwoven with "just the facts" of the Bible. I think this will be a very good step in my walk with God. Also I will have to check out One Year Bible On-Line.

Was just looking around and saw that you were looking for a site to read the Bible through in 1 year. Just the other day I was pointed to: http://www.bibleplan.org It has 13 different plans and can email each days requirement plus a link to the version of your choosing. Hope that I have not offended with the unsolicited advise.

I don't remember where I posted that either! I think this is the one I posted http://www.oneyearbibleonline.com/index.html?version=51&startmmdd=0101 but there are lots of them out there!

Also, if you are a religious person who is hoping to really think about what you are reading and apply it to your life, I would highly recommend visiting your local Christian bookstore and purchasing a journal-type guide. That is what I did and, while I didn't necessarily reflect on everything I read, I did find it extremely helpful :)

    Good luck!
