Lady of Orcival

Hello everyone,

First of all, I wish to tell you that English is not my mother tongue, which may account for weird turns of phrase sometimes !

I am French, a married 28-year-old woman who started reading in English a few years ago and has not stopped ever since. I worked for some time in an English bookshop in Paris and it has... more »

Right. And only an American judge would have had to take it seriously enough to give "unknown address" as reason for denying the claim! Rather than "dismissed as absurd" or "you gotta be kidding me". I really love their justice system - it may seem like a nuthouse now and then, but it allows so much creativity.

happiness...i read your pm only a minute back and those quotes are mostly what i need. it's just that the rough draft is getting ready. only then i would know for sure. so i'll let you know if there are more. you really liked this short story, right? i did too but only after i started working on it. i would like to read more of her stuff. her use of grotesque is so gripping.

and the essay...you'll never get to read :) only my man reads whatever i write and it's always applause from him basically because he is an officer with the defence services here and they're too gallant. i'm not a good writer. it's no big deal. and me a student? nope. i'm older than you and i'm carrying my second child. i work for an online website namesake so that my family doesn't bug me i'm wasting my skills. so i fool them with an occasional assignment if i'm lucky enough to get it and get back to my reading/cooking as soon as i can. i'm waiting to finish, upload this tomorrow and get back to my family in goa (west coast of india) and take up my next book.

now that's a long one. let me get back to work. what about you? work/family?

Hi! Thank you! I've been challenged to produce a new visage to replace the boring old one :-) I am working on the letter to you! -- the progress was slow last week, very much work, and during the week-end too. But I have hopes to be able to free myself by the end of tomorrow!

oh great...thank you so much. any edition will do. i just need to quote it from a three-dimensional book. so you can help me with your Faber ed? if so, i won't contact anyone else in here.

library....i live in a remote southern part of Indian suburb. online is my world. plus there are other things like i'm carrying and the roads are humpty-bumpty here and the public transport throws you off to corners...so my access is limited.

you have read so much for a non-English and you started reading only some years back...amazing. can you get back to me. i'm waiting.

I am reading a mystery called "Likeness" and enjoying it. Although I don't read very many of them, this one is keeping me guessing. Her previous book "Into the Woods" was good as well.

Never heard of it -- my fault. I will look it up on the Amazon -- is it in English? And will complete my Sharpe collection with the new titles you suggest, thank you!
I haven't read him in a while and maybe it's time to start again. Have you read any of Douglas Adams's books? That's another one I like a lot, even though he's more into absurdity and chaos - but he can have you laughing out loud.

I've read a few pieces by Wodehouse - and saw the entire Jeeves BBC series with Steven Fry, pretty close to the original text -- great. I like Wodehouse a lot but I don't find him much similar to Sharpe, who's humor is more impudent. They are alike in their excellent use of the language, brilliant.
I haven't read any of Sharpe's latest. Any recommendation?

Thank you for the invitation! I see you like Tom Sharpe -- whom I also love. The Riotous Assembly and the Wilt series, especially the first two books - probably the most hilarious things I've ever read.
