The discussion has been posted for the Good Reads November selection, Mistress of the Art of Death.

We're doing something different for December to wrap up the year. We've posted a list of all of the books nominated that weren't selected with the hope you'll find the time in December to read one of the books you voted for that didn't win and, then, share your opinion with us! Feel free to also share your thoughts on any of the books you've already read.

    Dhouha,

I'm afraid that I am not much help to you on "The Entertainer." I read it a long time ago and I have to confess that I am vague on the details of the play. I am an historian but my area of interest is American history, especially the American West.

I know what the 1960s were like in the U.S., a decade of civil unrest and violence and involvement in an unpopular war. But I am by no means an expert on what was happening in Great Britain during that time.

By the way, I really like your profile picture.

    Best wishes,
    HN

    Dear Dhouha,

I see you have already read "The Entertainer." I did not realize that when I wrote my first message to you. I thought you were asking me what the book was about. I now see that you already knew what it was about.

What was your opinion of the book?

    Best wishes,
    HN

    Dear Dhouha,

First of all, let me say that it would be my privilege to be your friend.

I read "The Entertainer" years ago. But I remember it as being a play written by the English playwright John Osborne. I did a little research and discovered that he died in 1994.

"The Entertainer" was written in 1957. It is a play about an angry and bitter, middle-aged, mediocre vaudeville entertainer who is at odds with his family and society in general. It starred Laurence Olivier in the title role. In 1960, it was made into a movie, also starring Olivier.

If you go to Google and type in John Osborne you will be directed to a number of sites dealing with Osborne and his work, including "The Entertainer."

I hope this answered some of your questions.

    Best wishes,
    HN

British Drama... sounds fun! I've been reading more plays than usual recently... if you like plays you might want to try out "Waiting for Godot", "Endgame" (Both by Samuel Beckett) and "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller. When it comes to theatre I prefer the plays categorized as "The Theatre of the Absurd." What kind of theatre do you like? (If you like plays/theatre that is.)

As for good books to begin with, I'd say: The Stranger (Albert Camus), The Metamorphosis (Kafka) and The Great Gatsby (Fitzgerald.)

When I read I try to experience the book without having to worry about taking notes, so I'd take notes later on. Allow the book, the words, the message to evaporate into your mind first. If you want to get full enjoyment from it, if you want to get the most out of it, I personally think that one shouldn't bother with notes and if you have to take notes, do it when you've finished the book. Literature is for entertainment first and studying second.

I've got Things Fall Apart on my shelf - I'm yet to read it though! - tell me whether it is any good when you get to it!

A lot of what I do revolves around some sort of literature, so it goes to explain why I've read quite a few books... I did have a question for somebody who speaks/reads French that I've always wanted to ask - does French translate badly? When I read French books (translated into English) they always seem a bit stunted...

What kind of literature do you think you would like? Any ideas...?
Also, I love giving recommendations of where to start/continue, do you want any?
