Hi My name is Durga and I love reading books. I have a Chronic condition and when I was waiting to have a major surgery I read lot of books to get distraction from the excruciating pain and the frustration. I had to gain weight and they had put feeding tube into the small intestines and I couldn't do anything except hook the feeding pump and stay in bed which was so boring and frustrating because I'm not used to lie down like that. My therapist suggested if you like reading the books why don't you start reading your son's books, I mean children books. That gave a chance to read all his books which my husband was doing with him. And when I read we get to talk about them together which made me feel so much better. Then I started picking books which are not very big from the library, then I moved on to other books slowly and my family never saw me without a book in my hand and not reading. Sometimes my son used to say,'mom can't you put that book down for a little while when we are watching movie and we want to watch with you as a family.' I used to put it down but my mind used to be on the book itself. I used to wait to get back to it. During that time I have read so many books I don't think I counted. My husband started a list and maintained it for a while but then we lost the tract.
Now I do an Internet Radio Program every week which takes lot of time. It's not just RJ kind of job I present a program selecting melodious songs and collecting interesting information and giving the commentary to all the songs for an hour which can be from 8 to 10 songs. I've started writing to Associated Content recently. After I submit the Radio Program for the week I write an article or two. For the last 2 months I didn't write that much because of health problems. I read Harry Potter books with my daughter who is 9 yrs old. I read 4 books in one yr. And I can read only when I go to bed and when I get to take medicine in the early morning. So I take long time to read the books. But I never give up reading whenever I get a chance I love to read.
I love to discuss too but need to find time for that. I'll slowly get to that too.
As I said, I'm a Chronic patient and am on lot of medication which scares me that maybe these medications make my mind slow down. But all these activities make me feel like doing more things than slow down.
My favorite quote is, ' When you are not in the process of learning you are mentally dead.' Which I do not want to happen.
I'm glad I became a part of Shelfari club through a good friend Venkat Chilla.
I enjoy whenever I visit the site. I like to add the books and recommend them to other readers and try to make more friends etc.
I always wanted to become a member of book club and now I'm.
Now my goal is to make my husband the member of this club. I know he hardly has time but he is the one who used to read lot of books. That was the common thing we have between us and we like same kind of books too both in English and our mother tongue Telugu.
Before I went to his house after the marriage every week he used to bring books and I used to read the book then we used to discuss the book, these are beautiful memories of my early marriage days. Sitting under the moon light watching moon from the coconut leaves which was so romantic but we used to discuss serious books and that was my favorite part.
I'm looking forward to make more friends and read lots of books to keep my mind going and not give up.
I wish everyone on Shelfari "HAPPY READING!"
