Hi. I am an avid book reader, and like to read during my freetime. These days I like to read mostly historical fiction, history, and non-fiction books. Some of my favorite authors also include Mitch Albom, and Malcom Gladwell. I also write book reviews as a hobby. I find that I enjoy writing my thoughts as a review after reading books.

Through some diabolical glitch at Shelfari I ended up with TWO accounts and could only sign in to the newly created one. So I've had to transfer all of my books and, more or less, start from scratch. In the process I've also lost all of my "friends" and "followers". I've tried to get Shelfari to correct the situation to no avail. They keep referring me to Amazon and the Amazon "help" people claim never to have heard of Shelfari. Hope you'll continue to "follow" me at my new location. Gunter

Hi Raja - not sure if you ever got around to reading The Linguist and the Emperor but the discussion thread is now up in the Non-Fiction History group.

    Hey Raja,
I finished The Big Short today and thought it was an excellent layman overview of what happened with the meltdown. It was not extremely detailed but I was looking for something quick and readable to get a better handle on this story; I may look into this more in-depth down the road. I think if you could see a plot of my blood pressure throughout the day you could easily pick out the times I was reading this book. It really is enraging how this all went down. I already had a low opinion of (most) of the people who work on Wall Street and this made it even worse. It is a shame that some of our brightest people are going to Wall Street where much of what occurs has no social or business value whatsoever; just people making bets with other people's money for the benefit of the extremely wealthy and at the expense of everybody else. The fact that one bond trader can lose $9 BILLION and walk away with tens of millions of dollars for himself is sickening. I have come to the opinion that traders and brokers and hedge fund managers deserve the same status in our society as used car salesmen. After reading this book I think that may be unfair to used car salesmen. That is just my cynical take though! Have you read any other books about the financial crisis? I am waiting for Jonathan Franzen's new novel to come out the end of this month; I hope it is good.

The History Non-Fiction Group is set to read The Linguist and the Emperor: Napoleon and Champollion's Quest to Decipher the Rosetta Stone by Daniel Meyerson for the Jul-Sep quarter. This book discusses the two men whose lives intersected over a love of all things Egypt and led to Campollion solving the mystery of the language on the Rosetta Stone. The book is fairly short - only 271 pages including the Author's Note at the end - and easy to read so it's a good book for the first ever quarterly read. Please join us if you're interested.

Hello Raja. Just thought you'd like to know that, in addition to the paperback and hardcover versions, my book "Weeds Like Us" is now available on KINDLE at www.amazon.com. It's also available on SONY READER. Other e-versions are coming soon! Best wishes, Gunter

Hi Raja - I'm the Admin for the History Non-Fiction group. I just wanted to let you know we're seeking nominations for the quarterly read. Please feel free to nominate something...the quarter doesn't begin until July so there's a bit of time to decide. Just wanted to let you know in case you were interested in joining in.

Yes, I was rather disappointed that Justine Henin didn't win in the end, but I suppose we don't always get the fairy tale ending! The Federer/Murray game turned out to be a bit flat, except for the end of the 3rd set - but overall the result was never really in doubt I think. We had some good matches though over the last week, so I can't complain!

I really liked Pompeii; although we all know how it will end the suspense is good and once again I liked his writing. What I especially liked was that I could understand the explanations about the workings of the water system, it would have greatly diminished the book had it all been too technical.

We had some good matches at the Aus Open - I thought Federer was gone yesterday! I don't get to watch much during the day unfortunately, but I'm enjoying the night matches very much . What about Justine Henin, isn't she having a great run! Hope you get to watch some of it.

Raja, Once again welcome to the Cornwell group. It is a fairly small group, so we are fairly laid back, and thereby it is easy to participate. Feel free to join in on all the reads and discussions. See you in the group, Ben

I really enjoyed Pillars of the Earth, it is now one of my favorites. The follow up book, World Without End, was also very good, but not as good as Pillars, although I particularly enjoyed reading about the plague and the medical practices of the day. It is well worth the read. Both books give a real insight into the Medieval period.

If you enjoy the Medieval period, Bernard Cornwell is an excellent historical fiction writer who has 3 book series on the period, Grail Quest, The Warlord Chronicles, and The Saxon Stories. He is very well research, and has notes at the end of his books to tell you what he has inserted into the historical events.

My favourite (predictable, I know) would be Roger Federer - but there are so many good and exiting players out there, it's almost not fair to pick a favourite! Who do you like to watch?

I haven't seen that one, Raja, I'll keep and eye out for it, hope you'll enjoy it.

Yes, I do read quick (if it's a good book, that is). Depending on what it is I probably get through 2 - 3 books in a week. However, the tennis season has started in Australia, so I'll be watching a lot more tv - my reading will go down accordingly!

I've not been to rome, sadly. The background is the coliseum in Pula, Croatia. Many Roman ruins can be found in Croatia--less development meant less destruction--and we were able to see a good many of them: a small temple, some walls and gates. I loved Croatia--at least the coastal towns we visited.

    Hi Raja,

The only book with the title Tsar I know is by Peter Christopher and is an illustrated history about the Romanovs. Is that the one you mean?

I haven't read Peter the Great, but I will add it to my list; Robert Massie is a good author and, from what I hear, his books are well researched. I have The Romanovs - The Final Chapter by him, which I hope to read soon.
