My Name is Kimberley (aka Queen Sista or Queen Earth or just Queen to most family and love ones) I’m a 38 African/Native American. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area. I am a Mother of two very intelligent African warriors. I am my parent’s oldest daughter and my sibling’s first or oldest sister and caring friend.
My addiction is reading I absolutely love to read most anything but nothing has captured my mind like Afro centric literature. As a child I struggled reading and absolutely hated reading period.
At about the age of 11my family moved to the Hunters View Public Housing Development where I met and played with the children of Mrs. Pearl Turner and Ms. D. Williams. Both Mrs. Turner and Ms. D were single parents attending a new community skill center to enhance their educational skill. One Saturday morning Ms. D rounded up five different families of children living in this public housing site and took us all to San Francisco’s main public library located downtown. This day we all got library cards. The librarians told Ms. D we would need our parent’s signature of permission in order obtain our cards. Ms. D with about 14 children and 6 different last names told her (In an assertive manner) we were all her children. I think I really like that fact that Ms. D stood up for to this woman in the biggest library I had been in made understand me reading was important because trust Ms. D didn't and still don't play.
And thus the spark was lit for my love of reading books.
As a pre-teen, books like Set Shot, Hoops and Motown improved my skills. At the age of 17 Man Child in the Promise Land, Before the Mayflower and the Autobiogrophy of Malcolm X would change my life and set a foundation for my love of myself, my people and my community. As a young adult African American History became my literature of choice. Reading set the foundation and for 20 years and I have been a servant leader to and for my people.
Peace and Respect yourself,
Queen
