Unfortunately, the slow economy is presently lending me and overabundance of time. I'm using it to wittle down the list of wishful reading I've accumulated over the ten years it took me to get through college. My main interests are political books and historically significant novels. But, in truth, I'll read anything.

    There is always a gem or at least I like to think so and this keeps me trucking through them.

    I can't believe you read Bel Canto!! I agree with all the observations you made in your review. Was it for a book club?

    PPS Poor you! I give you permission to just skim through the many words contained below! haha I just had coffee, what can I say? :)

    I just had to come back to tell you the name of the YA book that I loved, which featured a plucky, intelligent female lead!! Here's the title and synopsis. (btw I bought the book as a present for my LS, and I'm pretty sure she never read it. Must nag her about this! That WAS 3 years ago though :)

    "Every Time a Rainbow Dies"
    by Rita Williams-garcia

    In a love story that glows like the many-colored silk skirt that is its symbolic centerpiece,Williams-Garcia builds a story that aches with the longing of two young lovers in a dance of tentative approach and defensive retreat, and eventual trust and healing.

    PS I guess I'm saying, "Twilight" is not a book that provides a template for female empowerment, yet if looked at as a.Merely entertainment and with that B. Just one story about one girl's experience w/ coming of age...perhaps it's ok. :) However, I think it's a disservice to girls/women to bring too many "bellas of the ball" stories to light, without countering them w/ some authentic, more empowering ones. I hope more of the latter surface! Hey, have you ever read? ............ughhhhhhh I forget the name, it totally blanked! I'll be back!

    Ahhhh I think you're too cool, Arlene! I do understand what you mean regarding the message that a girl could take from the books/films. I think I've seen all of the movies w/ my Little Sister (who by the way isn't so little, as she just graduated from HS this past May! :) She & I also had a couple of discussions too, along the same lines that you mentioned.

    I think that Bella did evolve (HA i made a pun) through the series, as she became more confident and self-reliant, or at least interdependent. And yeah...she was a bit "stupid", or at least naive, to build her whole life around securing the affection of two "boys." I kept rooting for her to realize that her choices & possibilities could encompass more than just choosing between him or Him. I think young Bella needed to choose herself first, ya know? Like...get an "inner life", and perhaps develop a few interests all her own. But, I would assert (i added that word for fun & to hearken back to essay writing circa JR high days!) that many teens relate very easily w/ Bellas narrowly focused passion/obsession. I remember a time when I thought I would seriously die if a certain boy (whose name I now forget! haha) didn't show up for study hall. How would I ever make it through the day???? oy vey.

    Hiya! I just updated my "2011 Books Read" list here. woo hoo! :) I started tracking my reading life in 2006 (or was it 7?) I have the whole list @ Facebook on a NOTE. {not that anyone probably ever sees it, but I've just been in the habit of updating it there.}

    You know...I actually, really liked all the Twilight books!! It really surprised me how much I enjoyed them. Skated through all of them last Summer. I definitely want to check out the newest one by the author too. (so thanks for mentioning it!!) I certainly do know what it's like to pine for a genuine page turner! ha I was hoping STeve Martin's Object of Beauty might fit that bill--but it didn't. (But I loved his other novellas) This Summer I've read & felt pretty pretty riveted by several books: Suite Francaisse, Her Fearful Symmetry- by the author of ,"The Time Traveler's Wife...OH & The Elegance of Hedgehog was an elegant & interesting read!!

    Off I go....ending abruptly! :))) xo CHAI

    I see your reading The Red Tent, its a favorite book of mine, the imagery and atmosphere is really evocative and the family dynamics are surprising and tragic, enjoy your reading and I hope you love it as much I did.

    Thanks for all your input on those two books, I kinda figured that Atlas Shrugged was gonna be a little too long when I saw other peoples editions and the mammoth size of them, the idealism is quoted alot in politics and probably not very faithfully or circumspectly, but I like to learn about philosophies and theories and their origins so I'll pick up a copy at my library, thanks again for the help.

    But maybe I'll catch up indeed...
