Mary Ellen M

Reading has been a constant joy in my life. I am having great fun adding books to my shelf and
remembering not only the books but what was happening in my life at the time I read them.

I have enjoyed two careers: interior design and teaching (literature, design, art history, historic preservation and feng shui. )

Thanks for the opinion. I have too many books to read to waste time on books that are only so-so. BTW, are you going to be attending any of the Reading Festival events? I've got to read four books in the next two weeks and get some questions together for the panel!

What did you think of Alice I Have Been? I've come across this book twice lately and noticed it on your shelf as recently read. You gave it three stars but not comments. Do you recommend it?

Do you or your hubby enjoy "french cuisine" or, at least the idea of it, and do you enjoy wine? If so, the book I recently finished might be something you would enjoy. It's called The Vintage Caper by Peter Mayle who also wrote A Year in Provence and other non-fictions. It isn't high drama but it was lots of fun. Check out my review. It reminded me of the TV program "Leverage" just a bit. We own it, so it would be easy to get your hands on if it sounds like something you'd like.

I saw The Book of Lost Things on your shelf. Since you enjoyed The Graveyard Book, I think you'd also enjoy the bits of fantasy in the Book of Lost Things. Besides, the writer has a really excellent way of phrasing. Also, I'm going to bring Standing in the Rainbow into work for you - its Fannie Flagg and I think I promised it to you earlier. I have to take Mom to the dr. so I won't be in until very late tomorrow for the Friends meeting. I'll put it in you mailbox.

Hi, Mary. I’m the author of The Sandal Maker, a new novel about the public ministry of Jesus from a unique point of view. A story that will take you on a fascinating journey in first century Galilee. I’m including here the publisher's notes from Amazon.com. You can read samples at shelfari.com by entering the title. Let me know what you think.

    Book Description
Caleb, an elderly Jew, leaves the safety of his home in Cana on a mission to find a man he believes is in Jerusalem. Miriam, Caleb’s only remaining child, accompanies him disguised as a boy. In the desolation of the war struck Galilean countryside, father and daughter risk their lives to journey south on the Jordan River trail. As they walk, Caleb intrigues Miriam with a captivating story of his youth that will change her future destiny. A story of a time forty years prior when he became a sandal maker in order to observe a man some called the Miracle Worker. Caleb secretly kept notes of the events he saw and heard as he followed the crowds. With his objective, skeptical point of view, he reveals the fascinating ministry of the one he called the “Master.” Heart pounding perils and the threat of death endanger the two travelers, but nothing could foretell the fate awaiting them in Jerusalem!

    From the Publisher
    A. Michaelson's new novel, The Sandal Maker, takes the reader on a fascinating journey back to the year 70 A.D. in worn torn Palestine. The author creatively weaves two stories together, one in the present, the other in the past. Heartwarming, enlightening and tragic, The Sandal Maker paints a portrait of one man's life and his involvement in how the gospel came to be.

I can't believe it (or maybe I can); we have 134 books in common! Plus I see that you use book tags. I really need to show you how to "play book tag" with my group. I think you'd like it. Great people and great comments.

Yes, I know about the addiction! For a little while it actually eats up your reading time. It will level off after a while. When it does, let me know and I'll give you a new addition like joining the groups. I really like Booktivity, the Challenged Reader, and finally (for the really committed - or committable!) is Play Book Tag. Great fun for bookaholics. Keep taking those notes - you have no idea how many scraps of paper I've written titles on while waiting for the opportunity to get on-line!

You have read some pretty heavy stuff! I'd forgotten about Thoreau but, actually, I probably drove it out of my mind because I really hated Walden Pond. I didn't like Thoreau as a person, at least the one I discovered in "Walden."

Welcome Mary Ellen! Nice to see you here. Now, either you or Suzanne need to send an invitation to the other by going to the upper right of your main page and invite a friend which (I think) you can do from my page. Happy shelf building. There is a help link at the very top right in brown sign in area that might help you find all the ways to build your page.
