But anything that received an award, from Gouden Griffels (Netherlands),Man Booker to Newbery Medals for Children's books, signed books and photo's from the winners, different... more »

A wonderful book about human relations, a turbulent time, men and women, that at times makes you feel melancholic, at other times make you want to be part of history, and at other moments makes you realize that it has taken a long long time for many of us to be who we are and to be able to be open about it, while others are still in the same position as James was when he lived. A marvelous book that deserved the praise it got!

Wonder what the author was thinking when she wrote the book. Ofcourse, the subject she writes about are serious, but I have the feeling that this book is missing it's target: children.
In many ways I felt like this book was written for the wrong audience or by the wrong author. For me it felt as if all the children in the book where more or less adults and not real children, and I had a hard time reading it all the way to the last page.... and asking myself "if it is that hard for adults to enjoy reading this book, how is it for children?"
I think that is also the weak point of the jury of the Newbery Medal... they are all adults....

The only thing that I really liked where the cover and illustrations in the book.

When you start to read the second book of a series you might expect to have missed some valuable information from the first bok, but due to the fact that I had watched the movie adapted from the first novel I began here.
The mixing of the different worlds in a way dissapointed me. Especially after you have seen all those fantastic places and people in the Golden Compass, it seems all a little bleak. However, while reading on, suspicion grows, exitement comes and it becomes a nice fantasy novel. I must admid though that I do not like the authors anti religious views that are shown so openly in his books. It became more and more a fantasy novel for adults rather than for children.
