How was Girl with thw Dragon Tattoo ?
What is your favorite histrical fiction book?
You are so kind, Sabina,It is the tartan of the Smith Clan. Although it doesn't sound very Scottish the surname Smith is the most populous name in Scotland as well as the rest of the English speaking world. The colours are basically green and blue with yellow and red stripes forming the plaid. This photo was taken at my office when I wore it to work one day. It certainly caused a stir and the women seemed to like it. The kilt is actually very comfortable but women already know that since they are used to wearing skirts. Now that I have sent the kilted Conour photo I will probably change my profile picutre back to what it was. The kilt photo doesn't fit the profile frame very well.Cheers, Bill
I think no matter where you live young people have a hard time fathoming how much is really out there (in a lot of areas). I feel for young people in college having to determine what they are going to do for the rest of their life when they are 18. They just don't have enough experience to know what is available. But, they seem to make it through. I know what you mean about raising your children in remote locations. We now live in Houston but we raised our children in a small town in Southeast Texas (if you look at a map find the border of Texas and Louisiana and we were on the coast). It was great raising them there. I knew all the teachers and all the police officers. Great for keeping tabs on them :). I do love being in Houston now though. I'm a big arts fanatic and the arts scene is incredible here.Where did you visit when in the US? Is that your only trip here? My husband would love to visit Austraila. I just love to travel. So, I'm sure we'll make it there at some point. How long have you lived there?Glad your oldest daughter had a great European trip. Is she going to school? Has she decided what she is going to do when she grows up :) ?Well, better run. Have a cake in the oven. Just stopped to check out what was going on in Shelfari Land.
It is good to hear from someone who has actaully read Sophie's World. How old is your daughter? I have two. One is 21 and one is 17. What does WA stand for? What part of Australia do you live? Looks like you have lived in many countries. That must be interesting. I really want to read Helen of Troy. I love that story anyway. Like you said that one typically gets a lower grade of George's other work. I'm sure I'll eventually get to it.
It sounds interesting. I think I will add it to my 'to read' shelf. I may never get through all the books I want to read, but I will certainly try.
Hi Sabina,Are you enjoying 'A Place Called Here'? It sounds good. I have never heard of it. I read 'The Mistress of the Art of Death' recently and loved it. I am anxious to hear what you think about it.
Sabina,Thank you for the friend request. I've been thinking the same thing. Likewise, I very much enjoy reading your thoughts on various books! I see you have Sophie's World on your shelf. I bought it recently and can't wait to read it. Sounds fascinating. I also would recommend you bump up Memoirs of Cleopatra. George is excellent!Take care. Look forward to chatting further.
Welcome to book chat:)
Sabina,Yes, I understand the demands of family and children's activities. I still have two young ones at home who are always here, there and yon. I have enjoyed Shelfari as well. I like reading the reviews of others and being introduced to authors I probably never would have otherwise discovered. I look forward to seeing you on Shelfari.Bill
Sabina,You absolutely overwhelm and impress me with the quantity, speed and diversity of the books you read. I always look forward to seeing what you are reading and what you think about the books. Happy reading.Bill

Oh I love Spring time here (in Kentucky), not so much in California. But your windy and cold sounds like the weather I'm having now. It's a VERY blustery day. What I like to call a Winnie the Pooh day. We played in the gorgeous leaves and made a mess of everything. I'm sure my anal neighbors aren't too happy with us, but what we didn't do the wind would have anyway. =/ LOLHow hot does it get in your area of Australia? My parents visited Australia, but for the life of me I can't remember what time of year it was. They loved it, but I think they liked New Zealand better. I've not been to either so I don't have an opinion. But they did say the people are super friendly. Coming from California though I don't know if that's really saying much. LOL What do you say? We do have our house on the market. It's been almost three months. I don't mind moving so much as I hate having to keep the house in tip top "show" condition and with a young child that likes to "create" things, ugh, there's always something; right now it's rockets and submarines made from tubes. Basically trash turned into something. I don't want to squelch the creativity, but after awhile I'd like things in their proper places. Hope you have a great weekend.Melxx
Dropping in to say hello~How's the weather in your neck of the woods? Isn't it almost summer time? Melxx
Hi Sabina. I've finished The Conquest, and thought it well worth the read. My favourite of Chadwick's works is The Greatest Knight, but The Conquest comes a close second. If you can find a copy of either novel I definitely recommend picking them up. I didn't realize books are so expensive in Australia. Books here are more expensive than they are in the U.S., but I think they are still cheaper here than they are in the UK. I generally use amazon for my books, but lately I've been using bookdepository.com, too. It's a UK site - you may want to give them a try. I'm now reading The Day the Falls Stood Still, which is set in Niagara Falls at the turn of the 20th century. It's pretty good. I think I'm enjoying it more than I otherwise might because I've been to Niagara Falls several times, and because the author has weaved some Canadian history (WWI history) into the narrative. I don't read a lot of Canadian fiction, but it is always nice to read something to which one can relate. Take care.
Hi Sabina, I know you like historical fiction and I just finished reading The Illuminator, set in 1300s England. Just wanted to recommend it for you:-) I also put one of your favorites on my wish list: Elizabeth and Leicester. I'm fascinated by their relationship. Talk to you later!
Sabina,I saw your forum posting about my book, Threads, and wanted to thank you so much for your kind comments!I also wanted to address some of the points you made. Originally, in 2001, we thought the book would appeal to a Visionary Fiction and paranormal audience, so we opted for a cover and title that would steer historical fiction readers away from it. Knowing Tudor-philes as I do (and I do...), I was a little afraid of how they would react to the liberties I took with Anne's story. I was careful with her history, but the reincarnation theme might be off-putting to them, I worried. So the point was really to almost hide the storyline until I could gauge the reaction. I was brave enough to write it, but not brave enough to put it out there without sneaking a peak at how people would react.I was astonished to discover that my primary audience was readers of historical fiction - and that they had no problem with the reincarnation theme - so I contacted Amazon and had them change the title to "Threads: The Reincarnation of Anne Boleyn." That will also be the official registered title at the next printing (no ETA), and the cover will be a more traditional one.At any rate, I'm well aware of the issues with the title and the cover! I'm glad you gave it a shot in spite of that! All the best,Nell Gavin
hi sabina.i have the poisonwood bible if you would like to borrow it one day.i highly reccomend it.it really opened my eyes to how much christianity has changed and well religion in general i guess.hope you are well.:)Paris
Hi Sabina. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed Persuasion. It's definitely my favourite Austen. Have you seen any of the film versions? I've seen both of the more recent BBC adaptations many, many times. Mind you, I'll pretty much watch any Austen film adaptation over and over and over again :-) I recently finished Jordan's The Great Hunt, and thought it was just as good as the first book. I think The Dragon Reborn is next up on my to read list, although that it subject to change depending on my reading mood. I'm now reading Elizabeth Chadwick's The Conquest. It's a great book so far. I'm surprised more people haven't heard about Elizabeth Chadwick, she writes great historical fiction set in the medieval period. I don't think her books are widely available in the US though, although they are here in Canada. Are her books available in Australia? I recommend her, especially her novel The Greatest Knight. Have a great weekend!Melissa
