  • The Time Machine
    • Rated 3 stars

A well-known story about a scientist who builds a time machine, then travels to the future where the world is divided into the above grounders (Eloi) and below grounders (Morlock). The beautiful Eloi are food for the frightening Morlock. H.G.Wells creates a world where the future shows little to look forward to. A classic story.

  • Cloudstreet

This is considered an Australian classic. Set in Western Australia it tells the story of the house known as Cloudstreet and the two families who live there. The Pickles and Lamb families are as different as they could be. They live together at Cloudstreet for 20 years until they become part of each other's lives through the marriage of Quick and Rose. Each character is well drawn and takes a role in forming the story. Even if you are not Australian give this one a go. You won't be disappointed.

    The Story Girl

I read this as a child and had fond memories of the book. It was one of my mother's favourites too. I just reread it and it fell flat. Although the Anne books have kept their charm I did not feel that this one has.

  • The Children of the King
    • Rated 4 stars

A retake on the Princes in the Tower story. Well written, good plot and appealing characterisations. Set in England during the second world war when the bombing of London caused many children to be moved to safety in the country. The story interweaves the telling of the story of the princes in the tower by the uncle of the children and the children finding some strangely dressed boys in a deserted nearby castle. They soon come to the realisation that these are the very same boys from the story their uncle has been telling them.

Clark never disappoints. I always look forward to receiving and reading her new releases. This story is, as always well constructed with both likeable and nasty characters. Worth a read.

Although I enjoyed the positive message the book gives, it has become somewhat dated, more's the pity. I read it to see if it would be suitable to read to young children. I feel that it would only suit a select few.

I am not a fan but this is one of my sons all time favourite books. I found the characters annoying and self absorbed and the action slow and laboured.

Finally Gilbert and Anne are married. They begin their new lives in Glen St Mary's where Gilbert is the new young doctor. Sadness and joy and new friends are the order of the day for both as they learn to cope with all that life throws their way. Lovely book.

  • The Postmistress
    • Rated 4 stars

A world war II novel which follows the lives of Iris (the postmistress), Emma (the doctor's wife) and Frankie (the reporter) and how their lives overlap. Well written, it blends the different strands seamlessly. Worth a read.
