well, I loved the epistolary format, but I found the story a bit too mushy at the end

Regarding Maus, I would say that it isn't a typical graphic novel, rather, it is an outstanding example. There are lots of other really good ones too... and then the full range of decent, mediocre and bad. Let me know if you want recommendations. These are good to get from the library, since they are expensive.
I see that you gave The Emperors Children only 2 stars. I couldn't get past the second chapter and gave up on it.
