Avengers Disassembled is a story arc that starts rather tame but very quickly escalates into an all out catastrophe of epic proportions.

I have seen a lot in the way of negative feedback on this one and I can honestly say that I understand, some people will loose their favorite characters in this and the Avengers as we know them will change. It’s a huge turning point and a big change, so fan adversity is a given…however I actually liked the change up. I usually never have problems with companies killing off major characters and that’s simply because when it comes down to it I know that sometime in the future those characters will come back. So when they decide to shake things up I just go with it. Spiderman was a highlight of this issue, especially since this is a darker issue, so his humor is appreciated. I do wish that the whole reason for Scarlet Witch’s mental break down was explained in more depth or given another aspect, it really didn’t come off as anything more than a means to an end.

I have one major complaint and it’s always the same when it comes to major story arcs like this…it needs more than 3 or 4 issues or else it feels slightly rushed. I understand why they don’t draw it out but never the less it’s annoying. The art is consistent and dynamic however during the darker scenes some of the detail is lost in the shadowing.

I am interested to see how this will change things for the Avengers and I’m rather curious about what Magneto is going to do with his daughter.

The Ghosts of the Tattered Crow has a prevailing creepiness that mixes with a bit of curiosity that really keeps the reader invested in what’s happening. In 28 pages we get a story written with a wonderful amount of detail and emotion that keeps the pages turning. I was surprised that Eldritch really manage to capture the grit and grim of what I assume is a Victorian age London in so few pages. The ghosts are rather eerily and a bit sad, and the fact that they are apparently quite numerous makes the whole thing a bit unsettling. I love that each character clearly has its own personality and that Eldritch took the time to flesh out someone even though they’d only be present for a few pages.

I do wish that perhaps there had been more added to some aspects of the story but I found this to be well worth my time to read. I’ll be on the look out for more of Eldritch Black’s work from here on out.

The Demon of Gloamingspark follows the ever happy and quirky Professor Thistlequick as he attempts to buy a rather illegal seed in order to further his amazing experiment, however he gets way more than he bargained for. I rather enjoyed Thistlequick, he’s certainly a unique man and full of his own sort of charm. It was easy to picture him walking around with a happy bounce in his step and a rather childlike way of seeing the world around him. The writing has a wonderful mix of detail and whimsy that brings back memories of stories I read as a kid and earned this story an immediate re-read. Eldritch really paints the story and gives its it a life of it’s own. I’d love to be able to browse around the hidden shop and see all it’s curious odds and ends. I wouldn’t call Demon of Gloamingspark terrifying, though it may be for the intended younger audience, but it definitely had some moments where I was uneasy or uncertain on how things would go for Thistlequick and I can’t help but wonder what becomes of those involved. Though the story does wrap up nicely and is complete, I’d love to see more about Thistlequick and the curious people he meets during his shopping trip.

I was intially worried that the series might begin to drop off for me since I’ve been fairly in the middle with my last two reviews. It’s a good series, however I haven’t felt that real need for the next chapter once I finish the one I have. I can say that I’m beginning to feel that now.

The Arrival of Armando really picked up the story for me and I also really enjoyed seeing how the Socoli’s have managed to carve out a life for themselves very similar to how they lived before. It’s clearly not the same but I like that there is an effort to it and it’s interesting to learn more about the other vampires in this would as well. I like that we get to see a more grown up Vanora in this and that she’s becoming her own person, and has some wit to her.

    Readalong Discussion: Armando

So this week we are focusing on Armando and all of his swoon-worthy goodness. He’s dark, mysterious, and sounds damn near perfect to look at. I think the best thing about him is the fact that we truly have no idea what he’s truly up to, is he a good guy or is he a bad guy? We get glimpses of him for both past and present, so we can kind of tell where it lies but I’m more than a little curious to see how he gets to that point.

So I’ll admit that I am a big fan of art books based on video games and tv shows, there is something about seeing all the cool concepts and work that went into a loved project that just makes the experience even cooler. I’d have to say that this one is no exception.

Bioshock Infinite is a game that a lot of game fans were looking forward to since the first two games in the series, and since it took a long time to come together it is really cool see what kind of ideas the creators were throwing around before settling on the final storyline and designs. If you are not familiar with Irrational Games’ still of game, it tends to lean towards the designs that elicit some sort of emotion from the player, it could be repulsion or it could be curiosity (is it human or machine?) but it’s guaranteed to catch your eye.

The concept art is really strong in itself and I’m actually a bit sad that somethings couldn’t be used in the new game because they look amazing. There are whole sections dedicated to the character design/development for Elizabeth and Booker, as well as sections on the vigors, Columbia, Songbird, and propaganda posters seen through out the game. I am a big fan of the Vigor section because I honestly think I’d buy the bottles they designed if they were available, some of them are really great looking. The propaganda section is also really great because many of the posters in the game might end up being glanced over during the action, so it’s a good chance to see them. The artwork is beautiful and I love the full page scenes they depict some of the early ideas for the city of Columbia and Elizabeth.

The one complaint I have about this book is that while there is a ton to look at, there is not a lot of reading involved. I know it’s not meant to be textbook thick, but I would have loved a bit more explanation about the ideas behind some of the concepts or why they went the way they did. Other than that it is a beautiful artbook that makes a great companion to the game, and if you are a Bioshock fan then I’m sure you’ll really like this one.

I received this in exchange for an honest review.

When they say that this is one of the most fully realized fantasy universes they really mean it…this is one of the most detailed video game guide/art books I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. If you have a question about the Dragon Age world there is a very good chance that this book will answer it.

The book includes a detailed timeline that runs along the bottom of each page. It covers both known and unknown major events, and it includes a symbol for what the event pertains to (i.e. Chantry, the Crows, etc.). This is split into seven complete sections; Nations, Races, Religion, Magic, The Fade, The Blight, Bestiary. Each section is extremely detailed and includes some amazing never before seen artwork. If you were ever curious about the individual nations like Orlais, what they like to wear, or what the dwarves religion (The Stone) is like then the book is definitely going to have the answer. I’d actually be surprised if it didn’t have some form of answer to be frank. I think I actually found out more than I ever wanted to know about Dragon Age. The amount histories for each nation, each Blight, and each religion/race is just astounding. Also if you were wondering how much it incorporates the games, it does mention them or specific people from them…however if you are looking for a ton of information on the stuff specific to the games then I’m afraid this isn’t for you. You’re better off checking out the normal guides for that.

I adore the artwork as well. As I said before it includes some never before seen pieces that are print-worthy in my opinion. There are some great scenery shots that look fantastic and I’d love to have in frames my walls. They also include drawings of each beast mentioned and even some familiar faces.

This is one of those books that is perfect for your shelf if your a gamer, it’s detailed and worth flipping through time and time again.

Forty Days is a new way of looking a very old story, more specifically the story of Noah’s Ark. Stephanie Parent takes on the task of delving into the story and adding some depth to the family of Noah. This is not a overly religious story but instead it is a YA historical novel about family and love during a very scary and peculiar ordeal.

We are introduced to Neima before the Flood and we are treated just how her family is perceived by the other villagers. They are outcasts thanks to Noah’s strange fixation with a coming flood and his building of a monstrous Ark; it’s a source of immense tension through out the village and as a result Neima only has two friends, Jorin and Derya. I loved that Parent took the time to let us get to know Neima’s rather large family and I also enjoyed seeing the progress on the Ark as the deadline closes in. There is a immense attention to detail as Parent lists the animals involved, as well as occupations and their roles during the Bronze Age. She paints even the smallest of details in a big way giving the story a life of its own.

Neima, our main character, is the obedient granddaughter of Noah but she has a will of her own and a sort of passive bravery. I can’t even imagine the sort of panic and terror that she has to go through as the Flood starts, but Parent really gives you access to the character’s mind so that you can better understand how she’s dealing with everything. Most of the men in this novel are rather fierce and outspoken, one of which is Keenan. He is the cousin of Neima, and her mostly like suitor. He’s charming but he’s also egotistical, and he’s a man of the times…meaning he plans to be in charge when it comes to relationships. Jorin is the exact opposite of Keenan and the others. He’s sweet, soft spoken and willing to listen, and his intentions seem to be good; however he’s not Neima’s family.

This does end in a cliffhanger and it’s one that snuck up on me, even though I was fully aware it was coming. I blazed through this book in a day and then when I read the last page I went into panic mode because I need to know what happens. I can’t wait for the second book, Forty Nights! Stephanie is well on her way to becoming an author I put all others aside to read.

Every Day is one of those rare books that managed to work its way into my heart and a permanent place in my thoughts. I don’t get overly emotional when reading but this book really pulled on my heartstrings.

Our main character, A, is a bit different. A doesn’t have a body, so every day he/she inhabits a different body of the same age and lives a different life. For my fingers sake I’m going to simply address A as ‘he’ from now on. He never gets to stick around for longer than a day and so A is very careful to make sure that the person’s life isn’t affected by his presence. That is until he meets Rhiannon and falls for her, and so we are treated to a story that takes us on a journey of two people trying to find love in a very difficult place.

The most beautiful thing about this story is the level acceptance and experience by A. There are so many characters in this that we only meet for a few pages but they have depth, histories, and lives; for a brief moment we get to see a glimpse and their stories drew me in just as much as A’s.

The relationship between A and Rhiannon is a learning experience for both of them. A has never truly had a real relationship and he’s experiencing something that he’s truly never felt before. It initially starts with a bit of insta-love on A’s part and while this would normally bother me, it works for this character. He is capable of seeing more in a person in one day than most other people, but at the same time he has so much to learn about her. I love seeing how Rhiannon deals with the whole situation and I felt that every reaction she made proved that she was a good person and more importantly each decision seemed entirely human.

I wasn’t sure that I wasn’t going to enjoy this one, despite the glowing reviews and all the people who are Levithan fans. I’m new to books like this, because even though it’s fantasy it’s also very contemporary. However now I’m firmly standing next to those people who told me is was worth reading. I’m definitely going to read more from Levithan in the future.

There is really no excuse as to why I took so long getting around to this one, and I regret not reading it sooner because I’m really wishing I had picked up the sequel now.

Demon Lover follows Callie, a author and lover of demon lore. She’s a woman of strength and drive, and I enjoyed watching her grow as the story unfolded. She has a great heart and really sets out to help some of the others around her, even when it’s not in her best interest to do so. The demon lover is mysterious and while he has some pretty steamy scenes with Callie he is not cast as the whole point to the story, which is definitely a plus. I really enjoyed the part he played in the overall story and thought it was great that Dark gave us more to focus on than just the incubus.

I loved the town of Fairwick, it holds a unique appeal and charm. The fact that it is home to switch and Fae makes it like no other place on Earth and many supernatural being migrate to the town. I grew to love many of the residents of the town, no matter how small their roles. They were really a tight-knit community and though some didn’t open their arms to Callie, I loved that most of them embraced her and sought to make her comfortable.

I really enjoy gothic novels and the fact that this has that same feel to it, not to mention actually references other Gothic novels, made it that much more enjoyable. I will say there was something different about the style of writing and I can’t quite put my finger on it. It felt like it should be a more literary novel but had the flow of a fun paranormal fantasy.

This is a great book for those who enjoy a literary paranormal with a bit of spice, and I will say that I only recommend it for adults. I’m looking forward to reading The Water Witch, maybe I can get to it before the next one is released later this year.

I received this in exchange for an honest review.
