It did not disappoint, thought I found long passages that I could skip because they went much too deep into theoretical territory when I wanted to get back to the characters and plot. I can't fault the author for this completely because it's his vision to explain things so deeply, but I wanted back to the story several times (and skipped ahead to get there). ”

Shepard writes these characters pitch perfectly and places heartbreaking observations throughout. Including Edwin's thoughts of Gus or the suitcase as he heads towards the finish of the novel sticky with me as if I was him, and make me want to hug my own children closely and counsel a wayward, bullied student in my building if only because it's a good thing to do. Growing up can suck, but it gets better. ”

“One of the more unique memoirs I've read. There are elements of it that could stand with Hunger of Memory or other well-known memoirs that deal with race, but it's also much more. I feel like some people will be better equipped to read this than others. What I can say is that the language is fresh and original, mixing hip-hop, literature, and other pop culture references in without much of a safety net. Much like Baohaus itself, either you're in or you're not. ”
