Ann, I haven't been able to read at all since going back to school? Isn't that crazy? So I haven't visited Shelfari much. I plan to read a lot this summer. I always love to see what you're reading. You read the best books!
Was the film good? I remember when it came out. Maybe you could read the book now, since it's been a while since the movie was released. The novel is quite sharp and penetrating. The whole book/movie conundrum for me was settled when I decided to expect that the two kinds of art would bear little resemblance to one another, except in cursory ways. it helped release me from the disappointment. It can be difficult to do, though. We should read the same book and discuss it online!
I'm reading "Miss Smilla's Sense of Snow," by Peter Hoeg, a book your Ruth Rendell recommends. It's quite good! I'll have to read Miss Rendell, too, since you love her so...
Isn't it amazing? We both have lots of books on our shelves but only 14 in common! I actually thinks it's kind of wonderful, the places an individual's reading tastes lead them...
I wish I could be in a book group with you! You read such wonderful books. I know you took an international relations degree at Davis. How was that? Did you do any of your studies in Spain that one year?
Yes, the foot binding was something, wasn't it? The book read as very cinematic--not that I've ever written a screenplay! But I wanted to.I do love biography and other forms of non-fiction. I just finished my second biography of Flannery O'Connor, and I'm just finishing up All the President's Men. I have gone through long periods of time when I couldn't read, but right now I'm in an "on" period, so I'm trying to make the most of it.
I mean "rating" them!
What a marvelous shelf! And you've ranked them, too. I need to do that. My shelf seems woefully lacking in contemporary fiction...sigh...at one time I wanted to write a screenplay of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan...
